Ripcord

Ripcord: A Comedy about Fight and Flight
February 13-14, 20-21
James Theater
Iowa City
Ripcord by David Lindsay-Abaire is a comedy that unfolds in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility. The play centers on the contentious relationship between two elderly roommates, the fiercely private and curmudgeonly Abby Binder, and the relentlessly cheerful newcomer Marilyn Dunne.
Fueled by Abby’s desire for solitude and Marilyn’s wish for the coveted bed by the window, the two women engage in a seemingly harmless bet: if Abby can make Marilyn angry, Marilyn will move out. Conversely, if Marilyn can scare the seemingly unflappable Abby, she gets the window bed.
Escalating antics involve the facility’s aide, Scotty, and even their respective families, revealing deeper truths and hidden vulnerabilities beneath their hardened exteriors. As their battle intensifies, the play explores themes of aging, the fear of vulnerability, the search for happiness in later life, and the unexpected connections that can form even in the most unlikely circumstances. The humor is sharp and often physical, but the play also delves into poignant moments as the women confront their pasts and present realities.

One Book Two Book Festival

One Book Two Book Children’s Literature Festival
February 21-22
Various locations
Iowa City
Our community is very supportive of young people. We know who scores the winning touchdown for City High. We celebrate students who make all-state in music for Northwest Junior High. We cheer the top debaters at Regina. But do we know the best young writers in our community?
We should. As a UNESCO City of Literature, we rightly laud the published and soon-to-be published authors among us, but we tend to overlook the most abundant pool of talent in our area: our K-12 schools.
Recognizing and celebrating this talent is a big reason behind the City of Literature organization’s annual One Book Two Book Children’s Literature Festival. Like traditional festivals, it offers the chance for attendees — in this case, children and their families — to hear from published authors about their work. But more important is its ultimate goal: to champion writing by children.
