Billboard: Hancher Auditorium is a top music venue for 2026

Flawless acoustics, an adjustable lighting grid and impeccable sightlines

Billboard magazine named Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City as one of the top music venues for 2026.

“The venue perfectly balances concert hall precision and intimate energy, hosting artists like Stereolab, Jason Isbell and Neko Case,” the magazine wrote. “Hancher connects the energy of Iowa City’s creative community to the greater live-music world.”

Hancher was founded in 1972, and is a multidisciplinary arts presenter at the University of Iowa–serving as a hub for creativity and creative practice on campus, in the community, and across the arts field. 

The current building, which has a capacity of 1,800 in the main auditorium, opened in 2016 after a 2008 flood destroyed the original building. In addition to the main auditorium is the smaller Strauss Hall that can host 200 and provides a stage for intimate performances – including music in various styles and stand-up comedy.

In addition to the indoor spaces, performances on the Hancher Green overlooking the Iowa River have draw thousands of fans during the annual Fall Welcome Concert.
