Add your items to a time capsule

As the United States celebrates 250 years of history in 2026, The Gazette is coordinating a time capsule that will be sealed this July and opened again in 2076. The Gazette will have at booth at our July 2 event to collect items to be considered for the capsule, with hopes to spotlight the everyday items and local stories that seem ordinary now, but could feel dramatically different – or surprisingly familiar – 50 years from today. From everyday objects and local stories to hopes, predictions, and cultural pieces that define this moment in time, the capsule will preserve a snapshot of eastern Iowa today and what we imagine the future might hold. Examples of acceptable items are outlined here.
