Along the Trail

Events

The Iowa City area’s trails are interconnected with the university and community, making it easy and enjoyable to explore by bike. Here are a few great stops along the trail system with easy access for hopping on and off.

1. Sugar Bottom Bikes in North Liberty carries some of the best quality products the cycling industry has to offer as well as the basics for the weekend rider. Locally owned for 12 years, the shop also offers daily rentals.

2. Dunn Brothers Coffee is just a block from the North Liberty Trail on Crosspark Road. In addition to fresh coffee roasted on site, Dunn Brothers offers pastries, sandwiches made with hand-sliced meats and cheeses, and egg sandwiches – great protein to fuel you for riding.

3. Hotels south of Coral Ridge Mall are connected to an off-street trail that direct you to the mall as well as to North Ridge Park, a great neighborhood park where you can ride a short loop and return back to your starting point.

4. You’ll find Old Town Hall and the 1876 School House on Coralville’s 5th Street, just off Clear Creek Trail.

5. The Iowa River Landing, full of retailers, local restaurants, and brewery, is accessible via the trail on 1st Avenue.

6. The entrance to Mormon Handcart Park, located on the trail south of Highway 6, displays historical markers that tell the story of the Mormon pioneers who passed through Iowa City on their way to Utah.

7. University of Iowa’s Hancher Auditorium is situated on the Iowa River on the trail. In addition to a full calendar of shows, Hancher welcomes guests each Thursday night throughout the performance season for a casual evening offering food and beverages from the Stanley Café.

8. Big Grove Brewery & Taproom is a fantastic place for a meal, meeting with friends or enjoying live music. Located adjacent to Riverfront Crossings, its trail access is great perk for bicyclists.

The Iowa City area is extremely bicycle-friendly and plans for trail expansions continue. Visit our bicycling page for maps and information particular to different kinds of cycling.
