Observe MLK Day in the Iowa City Area

Day of Service: Unity Rally and March at 9:45 a.m. Starting from UAY at Eastdale Plaza and walking into Mercer Park Gym. Following the march there will be a celebratory program at Mercer Park Gym with entertainment, speakers, and lunch.
FilmScene: Special showing of “Selma”, a chronicle of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. On January 19, there will be a showing of “Within Our Gates” by Oscar Micheaux. It is the earliest surviving feature film by an African American Director.
University of Iowa: Weeklong community service projects from January 16-20. Projects include a food and basic needs drive, meals on wheels, coat drive, and more.
United Action for Youth: Partnered with the Iowa City Public Library for a month full of youth activities to honor MLK Day. On Friday, January 20 youth participants will get the opportunity to create art inspired by the civil rights movement.

Iowa Children’s Museum: Free museum admission on January 16 with special activities to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Coralville Public Library: Showing the movie “I Am Not Your Negro”, an Oscar Nominated documentary highlighting James Baldwin’s unfinished book about the lives and assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and Medgar Evers.
