Kick things off with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a classical piece that feels even more special when surrounded by the soft glow of hundreds of candles. It’s an experience that makes you stop and savor the season. If you’re looking for a holiday favorite, you can’t go wrong with a candlelit rendition of The Nutcracker. Experience the magic of A Blue Violin Candlelight Christmas on December 20th at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, where over 500 candles set the stage for an unforgettable evening of music and dance. The award-winning Blue Violin, a former first violinist of the Boston String Quartet, brings holiday classics like The Little Drummer Boy, Jingle Bells, and Mary Did You Know to life with innovative arrangements and artistry. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play by Joe Landry

Step back in time with Riverside Theatre’s It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play, a heartwarming retelling of the beloved holiday classic. Set as a 1940s live radio broadcast, performers bring dozens of characters to life, immersing audiences in the story of George Bailey, an idealist whose life takes a dramatic turn one Christmas Eve. Performances run through November and December at Riverside Theatre—don’t miss the chance to experience this timeless tale in a fresh, inspiring way.

Winterland’s Annual Englert Holiday Show

Winterland is back for its annual show, bringing the Grateful Dead to The Englert on December 21. Specializing in the Dead’s iconic sound, Winterland channels the band’s rhythm-and-blues roots and psychedelic rock with uncanny authenticity. On December 21, celebrate with the Iowa Heartlanders’ Christmas in Coralville at Xtream Arena or join the fun at the Winter Solstice Celebration at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center. When the sun sets, Iowa City shines–with holiday lights. Pack some hot cocoa, pile into the car, and be dazzled!

Holiday Lights at the Lake

Each year, the West Overlook Campground transforms into a winter wonderland for this spectacular drive-thru light show. Running nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, this holiday event is a joy for all ages. On Wednesday evenings, park the car and stroll through the illuminated displays on foot for just $5 per person. Proceeds benefit The Bird House hospice home, so your visit will make a difference far beyond the season.

Neighborhood Light Displays

Local neighborhoods light up the season with music and flair:

• Spruce Ridge Christmas Lights: Over 50,000 dazzling lights and musical displays at 4477 Napoleon St. SE in Iowa City.
• Rita Lyn Court: Known as “Sugar Plum Lane,” this street is pure holiday magic.
• 12th Avenue & 10th Street in Coralville: “The House” features inflatables galore and an enormous holiday tree, it’s a must-see for kids.
• 1697 Newberry Ave NE in Solon: Synchronized lights and music—tune your car radio to the posted station and enjoy the show.

There’s something special about finding the perfect Christmas tree, and Iowa City’s local farms are ready to help you create this treasured moment. At Colony Acres, the experience is as charming as it gets. Browse their fresh, fragrant tree selection while enjoying Sweet Shop treats during Tree Fest on Thanksgiving weekend. They also offer full tree processing services, making your trip as delightful as possible. Or, for a scenic outing, visit Wilson’s Orchard & Farm north of Iowa City, where trees are just the beginning. Sip on hot cider and soak in the joy of the season.

On December 6, join the Cookie Decorating with Paige class for an evening of designing treats like Santa’s sleigh, poinsettias, and festive ornaments. Enjoy sweet snacks, drinks, and the chance to create picture-perfect holiday cookies.

On December 7, get cozy at the Hand Knit Blanket Workshop, where local fiber artist Jessica Bass will guide you through creating a soft, chunky throw blanket—perfect for gifting or curling up by the fire. Then, on December 8, level up your holiday hosting skills with a Charcuterie Workshop. Learn to assemble stunning boards of meats, cheeses, fruits, and more. This free fine art show takes place Dec. 7–8 at the Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center, showcasing ceramics, paintings, jewelry, and more.
