Send It In!

November 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Curious about where and how to submit your writing to journals or contests? Would some camaraderie help you finally send off that finished piece or complete that residency or fellowship application? Putting your work out there can be hard in a discipline in which rejection is par for the course.

Join us quarterly as we celebrate and support each other as we take those risks!

Each session, a different community writer will present on an aspect of the submission process.

During each 90-minute gathering, we briefly learn about some element of the submission process and then each writer will have about an hour to research journals, prepare a submission, and click the submit button for one or more of their pieces.

The time can also be used to research writing residencies, apply for grants, or work on query letters.

At our next meeting at PorchLight, this is what you can expect:

1. Snacks and beverages. They definitely help with the fun!

2. A short lesson on the features of Chill Subs, a free online tool for finding journals to submit to and for tracking your submissions. (In past get-togethers, guest authors Audra Kerr Brown and Scott Russell Morris, respectively, have shared about cover letters and what publishers expect in a submission.)

3. Assistance, if needed, to find journals that are open for your work.

4. Time to send in one or more of your stories, essays, poems, or other work. We’ll cheer when you click “submit”!

5. At the end of the meeting, we’ll draw for a $15 gift certificate to Prairie Lights. This is a special drawing: for each rejection you’ve received since our last Send It In! meeting on August 21, you can fill out an entry form. So, the more rejections, the better your chances.

You will get the most out of this meeting if you:

o Have a piece of writing finished and ready to submit.

o Bring your computer containing said piece of writing.

o Bring your bravery to click on “submit” (we can help you with that.)

o Have a record of your rejections since August 21 for the gift certificate drawing.

We hope you’ll join the fun at PorchLight! Even if you’re not quite ready to send something in, you’ll learn about Chill Subs, which is a wonderful, free tool that’s widely used, and you can cheer on your fellow writers.

Not sure where to submit? We’ll share resources and ideas for you to use during the workshop and on your own later.

If you have any additional questions, you can reach out to Jennifer at [email protected] or Susan at [email protected].
