Free Gen Writing Workshop

February 16, 2025 @ 5:30 pm7:00 pm
Free

Come generate new writing material at Porchlight 1019 E. Washington St.  Led by Mauricio Ruiz.  Writers of all genres and experience are welcome! Free. Sunday 2/16. 5;30-7pm.

The Free Generative Writing Workshops provide a space for career writers, curious beginners, writers of all levels and stages of life. Our goal is to make it easy to meet and learn from some of the most talented writer/teachers living in or passing through Iowa City. Every month a new writer leads a generative workshop, presenting a prompt inspired by their own preoccupations, passions, or interests.

MAURICIO RUIZ is a novelist, translator, and cultural journalist. He has lived in Norway, Belgium and the US. He’s been shortlisted for the Bridport and Fish Short Story Prizes, and received fellowships from OMI Writers (New York, US), Jakob Sande (Sunnfjord, Norway), Three Seas Council (Rhodes, Greece), Société des auteurs (Brussels, Belgium), and Can Serrat (Catalonia, Spain). His work has appeared in Words Without Borders, Electric Literature, The Common, The Rumpus, The Masters Review, Letras Libres, Gatopardo, among others. He has published two collections of short stories and is at work on his fourth novel. He’s currently a grad student in creative writing at the University of Iowa.
