Dolly Parton, Faith, and American Culture: Remembering an Unlikely Angel

Celebrate “9 to 5 Eve” with an evening exploring the faith, music, and remarkable cultural legacy of Dolly Parton.
The University of Iowa Department of Classics and Religious Studies welcomes Sarah Dees, a scholar of American religion who is currently writing a spiritual biography of Dolly Parton, for a public conversation about Dolly’s place in American Christianity and culture.
Why did Dolly become more than a musical icon for so many people? What role did faith play in her life, music, and public identity? And what can her enduring appeal teach us about religion, celebrity, morality, philanthropy, and American culture?
Dees will offer a short presentation drawing on her research, followed by a conversation and audience Q&A.
Then stay for the Dollybration! Following the program, we’ll celebrate Dolly’s life and legacy with music, refreshments, and opportunities to participate and give back, including a special focus on Dolly’s commitment to childhood literacy.
