The Unique History of FRYfest — Celebrating 15 Years of All Things Black & Gold
This year’s 15th Annual FRYfest, featuring a concert with American Idol Winner Maddie Poppe is slated for FRYday, August 30, 2024.
Every year, a swarm of Hawkeye fans come together to kick off the new University of Iowa football season at FRYFest in Coralville’s Iowa River Landing. For 15 years, the event has drawn thousands of people: creating a rich mix of super fans who never miss it and new attendees, some of whom have had it on their bucket list and others who make it the focal point of their first trip to the Iowa City area.
FRYfest has become known as the marquee preseason event for University of Iowa Football, drawing local, regional, and national attendees. That’s because it offers an energized blend of a block party, concert, trivia, games, and, one of its most anticipated highlights: meeting coaches and players and gathering autographs!
Reading this, you can likely already hear the beat of ACDC’s Back in Black (IYKYK). But how much do you know about the event’s full history? Let’s dive into the origins of FRYfest, some of the event’s most noteworthy moments over the years, (hint: there are some Guiness World Records involved!) plus get the inside scoop on what to expect this year with the full schedule below!
What is FRYfest?
FRYfest is a FREE one-day annual celebration that showcases the pride of the Iowa Hawkeyes, including the world’s largest Hawkeye Trade Show and spirited pep rallies. And yes, it’s cleverly always on FRYday.
“In football, like in life, you must learn to PLAY!” – Hayden Fry
The Origins of FRYfest
FRYfest was started in 2009 by Think Iowa City, City of Coralville, and University of Iowa Athletics to honor Hayden Fry, the legendary head coach who transformed Iowa Football and left a lasting mark on the Big Ten school. The event was actually intended as a one-time affair. The inaugural FRYfest, which kicked off 10 years after Coach Fry’s retirement, was in celebration of the co-naming of First Avenue in Coralville (a main route that connects to Kinnick Stadium from Interstate 80) as Hayden Fry Way. “When 20,000 people showed up, we pretty much knew this would become an annual thing,” said Josh Schamberger, President of Think Iowa City in an interview with Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Hayden Fry’s Legacy
Coach Fry’s legacy is woven into Hawkeye Football, FRYfest, and the community. Known for bringing the iconic Tigerhawk logo to the University of Iowa , Fry’s influence extends beyond the football field. His charismatic coaching and leadership revitalized the Hawkeyes, making him a beloved figure in Iowa City.
His impact was nothing short of transformative. When he took over as head coach in 1979, the Hawkeyes had endured 17 consecutive losing seasons. Fry brought a fresh perspective and winning mentality that quickly turned the program around. Within two years, he led the team to a winning season, and over his 20-year tenure, the Hawkeyes won three Big Ten titles and appeared in 14 bowl games.
The Tigerhawk logo, introduced by Fry, has become synonymous with Iowa football.
When he first took the program helm, he knew it was in need of an overhaul. One of the easiest ways to change their image was by starting with their uniforms. “At the time, the best team in professional football was the Pittsburgh Steelers, said George Wine, former University of Iowa Sports Information Director during Fry’s takeover. “Their colors happened to be the same as Iowa’s, so Fry dressed his Hawkeyes like the Steelers.” But he knew they needed a fresh, distinctive decal. Hence the search for someone to design a logo. The task eventually fell into the hands of Bill Colbert, who was at the time the art director for Three Arts Advertising in Cedar Rapids. On a plane trip home from a business trip, Colbert sketched a rough design on a paper napkin. The design was eventually polished up and printed on helmets before presented to Fry who received the design with open arms. “I like that, a real splash of sunshine,” he said. The rest is history.
Fry’s introduction of the iconic logo, and the competitive mind game of painting the visitors’ locker room pink, left the University of Iowa Football program (and its fans) ignited new passion in the fan base.
Beyond the field, Fry’s impact extended into the community. He launched the “America Needs Farmers” (ANF) campaign during the 1985 Midwest farm crisis, raising awareness and support for farmers, a cause close to his heart as someone who grew up on a farm. His legacy is celebrated annually at FRYfest, a testament to his enduring influence on the University of Iowa and the broader community.
FRYfests Know How to Go Big: Notable Moments from the Past.
FRYfests of past years have included the enduring events mentioned above. But a few past years have been EXTRA special.
Guinness World Records
In 2010, FRYfest set a Guinness World Record for the largest Hokey Pokey dance, with 7,384 participants. This fun and quirky achievement highlighted the community’s enthusiasm and spirit. And it was even led by Hayden Fry himself! If you aren’t neck deep in Hawkeyes lore like us, you may be wondering, Why the Hokey Pokey? At the start of his tenure as head coach, Fry began honing on positives after games. “I’m not sure, but I think it was Mel Cole (a linebacker on the Hawkeyes team from 1989-1991) who said ‘Lets do the Hokey Pokey’ after a big win,” said Fry. “From then on, we did it after every big game we won, particularly ones where we weren’t favored.”
FRYfest added another Guinness World Record in 2014 by hosting the longest marathon cornhole (bags) game, lasting 26 hours, 12 minutes, and 44 seconds. Do you think they ever set down their drink?
America Needs Farmers
The 2019 FRYfest celebrated the 30th anniversary of the America Needs Farmers (ANF) initiative, honoring the contributions of farmers to the community and the nation.
“The thing I’m most proud of here at Iowa is putting the ANF on our headgear.” – Former Head Coach Hayden Fry
75th Anniversary of Herky
In 2023, FRYfest marked the 75th anniversary of Herky the Hawk, the feisty feathered mascot of the Iowa Hawkeyes. This milestone was celebrated with special events and activities dedicated to our favorite Hawk.
