Plein Art Class with Jess Duling on the Lawn at Big Grove Brewery – Iowa City

This is a free plein air painting art sesh on Tuesday July 23rd at Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City. We will be painting a collective still life of items you all bring from home with loose instruction. This event is for all skill levels and ages 12-100. Meet at 5pm to settle in and plan to start painting by 5:30, we should finish up around 6:30 pm but feel free to stay till 7pm :)
Supplies are provided however there’s a limited amount so be sure to get there early if you need materials!
I (Jess, Refuge Studios) will briefly run down how to work with different painting mediums, show you how to use a color mixing chart, and to answer any questions about painting and art; but ultimately you’ll be painting, experimenting, and playing on your own! We’ll have everyone introduce themselves and their object and then at the end (if everyone is comfortable) we’ll share what we painted. The goal is not to expect to walk away with a masterpiece (although it’s great if you do!) but rather enjoy a new place in your city, meet your neighbors, and play around with art making.
Lastly there is no cap on attendance!
What to bring!
- One still life item: This could be flowers, fruit, a plant, glassware, tchotchkes, an old board game, books, candlesticks, etc. Colorful or unique items are the best for painting but there are so many options for what to bring. Nothing inappropriate and nothing of high value! We’ll be careful but accidents do happen and there may be a slight wind so keep that in mind. Everyone is responsible for their own things.
- Painting/Drawing Materials: We’re able to supply materials for around 20 people but if you have access to materials from home please bring them for yourself so that others may be able to use our supplies. If you want to try our paint just let me know and I’d be happy to fill your palette!
- Clipboard or other hard surface to paint on.
- This event may be outside so you are subject to the elements of nature. Ideally we’ll be outside if it’s not too hot, otherwise we will be in their event space indoors. Dress and plan appropriately.
- Masks are encouraged but not required. While we may be outside we will still be in close proximity to one another and sharing some supplies. If you are feeling ill please do everyone the courtesy and stay home. There will hopefully be more events so you can catch the next one!
- Some materials will be provided. We are able to provide the painting supplies such as: paper, brushes, Holbein paint, and paint trays. But please remember to bring a clipboard or other hard surface to paint on!
- Do I have to do painting? Nope! You are welcome to bring any drawing/art materials you want from home. I can even fill your palette with the paint if you like. Just know that you are responsible for your own things.
- Parking: Big Grove has a large parking lot so there should be plenty of available parking especially during a weekday. If parking is full, they ask us to not park in the nearby businesses lots. Walking/biking is highly encouraged!
- Accessibility: We will be in the back of Big Grove’s patio area or inside their event space if the weather is too hot. Either way there are plenty of options for comfortable seating and tables to sit at, so if you require accommodations just let me know! Accessibility parking is available.
- Do I have to spend money for this? Nope! While you are able to buy a drink or snacks to enjoy while we paint there is no obligation to order anything while we enjoy their space.
