LGBTQ+ Friendly Travel in the Iowa City Area
The Iowa City area is known for its inclusive and proud atmosphere, making it a welcoming and often underrated destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. We can say this because in the past few years Iowa City continues to get praise from national outlets. Iowa City has been named among the top for destination cities in the U.S. by the GayTravel Awards with the likes of San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and more. The Advocate has listed Iowa City among the “Gayest Cities in America“. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation scored Iowa City a 100 out of 100 on the Municipal Equality Index (MEI) Scorecard. Thrillist lists Iowa City as the “most gay friendly city in Iowa”. From events to hotels, bars, and restaurants, we have everything you want and need for a proud stay.
Attend LGBTQ+ Events
Keep an eye out for LGBTQ+ events in the Iowa City area. The Iowa City Pride Festival is one of the oldest and largest in the Midwest and the whole country. It’s kicked off by an annual parade then followed with live music, vendor fair, and drag show. Coralville also has an annual pride event. Let Love Fly in North Liberty is another favorite community celebration of love. Some other annual events in our community often have LGBTQ+ programming. For example, the Iowa City Downtown District Block Party is known for an amazing drag show!
Visit studio 13
Studio 13 is a gay nightclub in Downtown Iowa City. It host various events including drag shows and dance parties, providing a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere for the LGBTQ+ community. Studio 13 has become a very popular spot for nightlife. You will know when you get there when you see the bright and colorful rainbow mural surrounding the entrance.
Bars & Restaurants
While all our bars and restaurants in the Iowa City area are welcoming to all, there are some favorites within the LGBTQ+ community. Starting with Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City, one of the most popular breweries in the state. They often hold drag events like shows, brunch, and bingo. Every year during Pride Month they release a beer called “Rainbow Connection” with proceeds going to area pride organizations. Other local favorites are Pullman and Micky’s Irish Pub in downtown Iowa City. Tavern Blue in Coralville is another spot that hold drag events.
WHERE TO STAY
The Highlander Hotel is a newly remodeled spot that gives a throwback retro vibe. The real fun is in this hotel with live music on the weekends to the pool, arcade, vinyl lending library, and full food menu. Tucked right into the heart of downtown, the Graduate is another welcoming spot with its own niche. This literature themed hotel surrounds you with local history with books and written stories all over the lobby. It is also connected to its own restaurants and coffee shop along with being steps away from everything downtown Iowa City has to offer.
