UI Family Weekend Ideas
Family Weekend at the University of Iowa starts on Friday. Whether you are visiting for the first time or seasoned to the Iowa City area, there is always something to do while you’re in town. Here are a few ideas for you to make the most of your weekend!
Old Capitol Museum
Visit one of the most iconic buildings in Iowa – the Old Capitol Museum. The famous gold dome makes for a perfect picture background and is a symbol of Iowa City. Inside you can learn about the history of our state from back when the building first served as Iowa’s main Capitol Building. Each room still looks the same as it did in the mid 1800s.
Pedestrian Mall
One of the more popular places for tourists in Iowa City is the Pedestrian Mall located downtown and it’s for good reason. There are dozens of shops, bars, and restaurants that will suite anyones needs. It’s the perfect spot to chill outside on a bench or patio. Come back after dark for some of the best night life in the whole state.
Natural History Museum
The second oldest museum in the United States west of the Mississippi River. The University of Iowa’s Museum of Natural History is home to over 160 artifacts, objects, and specimens on display for learning and exploration. The most popular is Rusty the giant sloth who is famous in his own right.
Stanley Museum of Art
Just recently opening their new location in August 2022, the University of Iowa’s Stanley Museum of Art is a must visit for art lovers. It has more than 1,700 pieces in their collection stemming from the likes of Jackson Pollock, Grant Wood, Elizabeth Catlett and more.
Iowa River Landing
The Iowa River Landing in Coralville is another spot with several stores, boutiques, and restaurants. Some popular retail spots include Lululemon, Anthropology, and Active Endeavors. There is a nice walking trail at the Iowa River Landing Wetland Park and a sculpture walk throughout the area. Enjoy a sweet treat from Scratch Cupcakes or Cookies & Dreams.
