The summer is full of events and festivals. Attend Summer of the Arts’ Friday Night Concert Series on Friday night after exploring the downtown district and pedestrian mall. Attending a local farmers market is a must – stop by the most popular market at Chauncey Swan Ramp on Saturday mornings from 7:30am – noon. It’s a great spot to have breakfast and support local growers and makers.
Next, head to Big Grove Brewery & Taproom for lunch, a local favorite hangout, for food, local beer, live music, and indoor/outdoor games. Organized bicycle rides are also popular this time of year – a new event called Big Rove makes its debut in June. Have kids? Take them to one of three splash pads, open Memorial Day to Labor Day, at Wetherby, Fairmeadows, or Tower Park. North Liberty’s Aquatic Center is also a great place to cool off, featuring diving boards, waterslides, and zero-depth entry. Or, take a paddleboat, kayak, or standup paddle board out onto the lake at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area.
In the evening, attend one of Riverside Theatre‘s Shakespeare plays in Lower City Park, a production performed on an outdoor stage inspired by the famous Globe Theatre. Or watch an independent film at FilmScene for a unique experience – there are even select rooftop screenings.
