I took lessons from Mike Jones for years. I have never met a more knowledgeable, nicer, & more professional instructor. The method that he used was always a challenge and a new exploration. I was never bored. I never found a topic where Mike could not break it down to make it understood. If you are a new student, You will get an outstanding start on guitar playing. If you are an experienced player, your playing will be expanded in ways you never thought possible. I cannot recommend Mike Jones highly enough.
I'm delighted to see that Mike's studio is now up and running. Having taught him for six years and shepherded him through his B.A. in classical guitar, I can say without reservations that he was the most musically gifted and dedicated of all the students whom I taught over nearly a half century. Having had the pleasure of reading his doctoral dissertation, I can also tell tell you that his intellectual command of music theory is world-class, and among guitar teachers extremely rare. Furthermore, Mike's deep understanding of the physiological aspects of virtuoso technique--what works best, what doesn't, and why, for reasons dictated by Mother Nature--is as well informed as that of the most highly regarded career guitar teachers to be be found anywhere. Finally, to round things off, you won't find a teacher anywhere who brings more sincerity, less "attitude," and more pure old human fellowship to the tasks of effective and enjoyable teaching. So no matter a student's level of development, aspirations as a musician, technique problems, or any other variable I can think of, Mike has so much to offer that he would be the logical choice for virtually any guitar student within commuting distance of Iowa City. I look forward to following his success as a studio teacher by email with him and perhaps even some of his students as well.
Michael is an outstanding teacher -- highly trained, patient, encouraging, and profoundly knowledgeable, not only as a professional guitarist, but also as a music theorist and composer. He has the knowledge and skills to teach you not only how to play with excellent technique, but also how and why the music is constructed the way it is. I would highly recommend Michael to anyone, for all styles and genres of music study.
Mike taught me everything I know about the guitar, and has always been a tremendous resource for musical knowledge and theory.
