On Monday April 4th, Iowa City audiences will be presented with an evening-length, multi-disciplinary World Premiere from the 2021-22 Grant Wood Artist in residence, violinist and composer, Josh Henderson. Based on “The Day the Music Died”, an impressive nonet will perform the electrifying new work, which can be described as Modern Jazz infused chamber music, with a steroid shot, replete with nodes of Punk Rock and Shoegaze. Augmented with a trio of artists from the University of Iowa dance program led by Jaruam Xavier and gripping lighting design from Gabi Vanek, the concert will feature Iowa City staple Dr. Damani Philips (Head of the UoI Jazz Program) on saxophones, and a string-quartet comprised of Ramel Price and Sabrina Tabby (Quad Cities Symphony) on violins, Adrian Gomez on cello, and NYC based solo artist Amadi Azikiwe on viola. Rounding out the ensemble will be the intoxicating vocalist Sylver Wallace (Chicago), Rick Martinez (Portland, OR) on Percussion and Brendon Randall-Myers (NYC) on guitar.
“Henderson plays his violin like his
dancer co-stars use their bodies, with seemingly effortless passion.”
