The New York Times says, “The music serpentwithfeet makes is immediately distinctive, harnessing his gospel and classical training to a startling emotional openness.” The musician brings that sensibility to an ambitious new project.
Telling the story of two men finding themselves and falling in love in a gay dance club, Heart of Brick is a theatrical dance and music performance that celebrates the multi-generational spirit of the Black queer community. serpentwithfeet’s alternative R&B music—in combination with the direction of MacArthur “Genius” Wu Tsang and the choreography of Raja Feather Kelly for seven virtuoso dancers who are masters of many movement styles—shapes a tender and evocative new work of creative storytelling.
Co-commissioned by: The Joyce Theater Foundation; The International Summer Festival (Kampnagel); The LA Phil – with generous support from Linda and David Shaheen; Seattle Theatre Group; and Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa.
