DESCRIPTION:A public lighting installation\n\n\n\n\nTwilights transforms the Graduate Walkway entrance to the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall through an immersive sculptural lighting installation. Drawing inspiration from Drew Etienne’s existing Campfire Stories mural and the nostalgic beauty of Midwest summer evenings\, this collaborative project between the Iowa City Downtown District\, Slingshot Architecture\, Teknephos\, local artist Hannah Givler\, and the City of Iowa City enhances both the aesthetic character and functional safety of this vital downtown connector. \nThe installation captures the organic beauty of firefly flight patterns through looping light structures that suspend overhead\, creating an enchanting pathway that evolves as visitors move through the space. Three clusters of sculptural lighting elements feature warm white pendant lights surrounded by looped linear elements in an ember glow\, evoking the gestural quality of long-exposure night photography. Each pendant hangs within the center loop of its linear element\, grouped and suspended in playful arrays that interact with one another overhead along the length of the walkway. \nThe lighting elements are structurally suspended from a canopy of steel square tubing and brackets developed in collaboration with Hawkeye Weld and Kirkwood Community College’s Advanced Welding Technologies program. Three rows of color-changing LED wall wash lighting illuminate the existing mural and create subtle animations\, transforming the space into a dynamic sensory experience. The lighting programming\, developed by Mike Lambert of Teknephos\, allows the space to transform through color and movement. \nBeyond its artistic impact\, Twilights significantly improves wayfinding and safety through enhanced illumination while using materials selected for durability and potential future reuse\, reflecting a commitment to sustainable public art practices that serve Iowa City’s residents and visitors.
