SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha - Glocal at Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Using the fast-paced and visually engaging Pecha Kucha format—meaning “chit-chat” in Japanese—five student speakers will share their most meaningful “glocal” experiences in six-minute presentations composed of 20 timed slides. Presenters Leila Assadi\, Zhuolun Li\, Cynthia Okafor\, Sofia Sabogal\, and Kashish Verma will offer personal stories and reflections about culture\, curiosity\, and the lessons learned from living and studying in a multi-faceted and interconnected world. A panel discussion and Q&A will follow the presentations. \nSponsored by International Programs and the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC)\, and planned by the campus-wide International Education Month Steering Committee\, this new addition to International Education Month programming invites the campus and greater Iowa City community to explore the intersections between global and local\, and how they connect through the lived experiences of University of Iowa students. \n \nRegister to attend at https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/aayrbmb \nThe event is free and open to the public. \nAbout International Education Month: Each November\, the University of Iowa celebrates the many ways international education and exchange opportunities prepare citizens for community building in both national and international settings. Visit the International Education Month site at https://international.uiowa.edu/celebrating-international-education to see all the events. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance at daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu or 319-467-1619.

Drawing on her 30 years of experience leading market-based initiatives across 35 countries\, she will explore how innovation\, adaptability\, and local enterprise are redefining the future of international engagement. \nJoin Byrne and International Programs to explore how the sudden 83% drop in U.S. foreign aid funding is forcing a shift in problem-solving on global issues. The lecture looks beyond previous aid models to present a clear vision of the future; one where private enterprise and local markets become the primary drivers of progress. \nPre-register to let us know you’re coming at https://international.uiowa.edu/rsvp-commitment-internationalization-lecture \nKarri Goeldner Byrne is a senior advisor and independent consultant with experience across 35 countries\, helping organizations navigate complex economic challenges in some of the world’s most demanding environments. SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Entangled Ecologies: Memory\, Place\, and the Camellia Forests of Jeju
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on ethnographic research with Jeju villagers\, conservationists\, and environmental activists\, Dr. Jeongsu Shin\, LB Korean Studies postdoctoral associate in the East Asia Program at Cornell University\, will explore how memory\, ecology\, and place intertwine in Jeju’s Giving Forest. Once a site of violence during the April 3rd Uprising and later transformed through afforestation and tourism\, the Giving Forest has become a living archive of layered histories and ecological regeneration. Dr. Shin’s lecture\, “Entangled Ecologies: Memory\, Place\, and the Camellia Forests of Jeju\,” will take place during International Education Month. \nDr. Shin is the LB Korean studies postdoctoral associate in the East Asia Program at Cornell University. An ethnographer of Korea\, her work bridges environmental studies\, Asian studies\, and science and technology studies. Her book project\, Worldly Ecologies: Landscape\, History\, and Decolonial Environmentalism on Jeju Island\, explores how environmental movements and ecological research in Jeju\, South Korea\, have shaped new understandings of Jeju identity and autonomy\, tracing their roots through colonialism\, the Cold War\, and neoliberal development to the present. \nThe Korean Studies Research Network (KoRN) aims to bring together scholars whose research focuses on Korea-related topics and to provide mentoring to emerging scholars. It serves as a platform for collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scholars and graduate students at the University of Iowa and other institutions across the Midwest through seminars\, speaker series\, and workshops. \nRegister at https://uiowa.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_u6G4Lh-sT7K4A9_4t29yhQ \nEach November\, the University of Iowa celebrates the many ways international education and exchange opportunities prepare citizens for community building in both national and international settings. Visit the International Education Month site at https://international.uiowa.edu/celebrating-international-education to see all the events taking place in November. \nThis event is made possible through generous support from International Programs and The Stanley-University of Iowa Foundation Support Organization at the University of Iowa. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events.
