DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Stanley Museum of Art for an evening of performance\, video\, and discussion featuring two internationally acclaimed contemporary artists: Julien Creuzet and Aguibou Bougobali Sanou. Both artists engage with historical African masks and figures\, using performance\, animation\, and dance to reanimate them and forge new narratives of contemporary relevance. \nCreuzet’s talk will complement his work currently on view in the galleries\, Zumbi Zumbi Eterno. This video installation explores the history of resistance to slavery in Brazil during the late 17th century. His three untitled videos breathe new life into Congolese minkisi (power figures)\, allowing them to respond to the musical soundtrack for Zumbi Zumbi Eterno through dance and animation. \nSanou’s performance\, Mask Utopia: The Remaining Fragments\, engages with African masks through contemporary choreography and immersive soundscapes\, transforming the stage into a space of worship and invocation to explore utopian visions. \nProgram: \nArtist talk by Julien Creuzet \nPerformance of Mask Utopia: The Remaining Fragments by Aguibou Sanou (20 minutes)\nIntermission \nConversation with Cory Gundlach\, Curator of African Art \nAudience Q&A \nThis program is supported by a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. \nAbout the artists: \nJulien Creuzet is a French-Caribbean artist who lives and works in Paris. A visual artist and poet\, he actively intertwines these two practices via amalgams of sculpture\, installation\, and textual intervention that address his own diasporic experience and his relationship to his ancestral home\, Martinique\, which he refers to as “the heart of my imagination”. Inspired by the poetic and philosophical reflections of the French Martinican writers Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant on creolization and migration\, Creuzet’s work focuses on the troubled intersection between Caribbean histories and the events of European modernity. Creuzet’s distinctive sculptural language often repurposes found materials; relics of detritus washed ashore by oceans or the unrelenting progress of history. His choreographic research—including the ongoing Mask Utopia project—explores African mask traditions\, embodied spirituality\, and their intersections with contemporary performance and immersive technologies. A Fulbright Laureate (2018) Sanou has received international recognition for his innovative practice. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature and may have to cancel an open house due to rain. Free admission. 100% of donations are matched and forwarded to UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
