SUMMARY:Jefferson Starship performs at The Englert Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Jefferson Starship is one of the most successful arena rock groups of the 1970s and 80s\, earning 3 platinum and 8 gold records\, as well as numerous Top 40 singles. While Jefferson Starship continues to tour today\, the band has experienced numerous lineup and personnel changes\, and each of those members have contributed to the magic and alchemy that make Jefferson Starship iconic. \nThe legend of Jefferson Starship begins in 1970\, when Paul Kantner released an album titled BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE under the artist name “Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship”. The story\, however\, begins with the coalescence of the band Jefferson Starship itself\, in 1974. That collection of talent included John Barbata\, Craig Chaquico\, Papa John Creach\, David Freiberg\, Paul Kantner\, Peter Kaukonen\, and Grace Slick. They first toured as Jefferson Starship in 1974\, and released the album\, DRAGON FLY which was certified gold in 1975. Kaukonen departed the lineup after that initial tour and the remaining members welcomed Pete Sears on bass. Shortly thereafter\, Marty Balin joined the Jefferson Starship lineup. Balin had co-founded Jefferson Airplane with Paul Kantner\, and the Airplane roster also included Grace Slick\, David Freiberg\, and Papa John Creach at various points during that band’s existence. Balin’s addition to the Jefferson Starship lineup resulted in a reunion of sorts for all those players under a new banner. The new collection of personnel returned to the studio to record RED OCTOPUS\, which was released in June of 1975. The record reached #1\, propelled by the success of the hit singles\, Miracles and Play on Love. It has sold over two million copies. Papa John Creach quietly left the band after this whirlwind success. Jefferson Starship’s hit-making streak continued with 1976’s SPITFIRE\, which featured the hit\, With Your Love\, and 1978’s EARTH\, powered by the hits\, Count on Me and Runaway.\n \nThe band evolved again in 1979. Marty Balin and Grace Slick departed by choice\, and John Barbata had to leave due to a serious car accident. Mickey Thomas stepped in on lead vocals and Aynsley Dunbar picked up the sticks. This latest incarnation of Jefferson Starship produced the band’s fifth consecutive hit record\, FREEDOM AT POINT ZERO\, thrust to gold status by the hit single Jane. MODERN TIMES followed in 1980\, finding its way to gold certification on the wings of hit single Find Your Way Back. Grace Slick sang background on the album and returned to tour with the band in 1981. In 1982\, Aynsley Dunbar left the group\, and Donny Baldwin assumed drum duties. The band’s 1982 release WINDS OF CHANGE would also produce two top 40 hits\, Be My Lady and Winds of Change. 1984’s NUCLEAR FURNITURE kept the band’s streak alive\, planting No Way Out on the top 40 and selling over 500\,000 records. \nPaul Kantner left due to creative differences in 1985\, and after some acrimony with the remaining band members\, the name “Jefferson Starship” was retired. The remaining members of Jefferson Starship at that point morphed into “Starship” and enjoyed continued success. \nIn 1992\, Kantner returned to touring life and revived the name “Jefferson Starship”. True to its legacy\, the members have changed over time\, but the heart and the magic of all those hits remain. Paul Kantner died in 2016. \nThe current touring Jefferson Starship lineup features founding member David Freiberg\, along with legendary Jefferson Starship & Starship drummer Donny Baldwin\, keyboardist Chris Smith\, lead vocalist Cathy Richardson\, and lead guitarist Jude Gold.

SUMMARY:Climate Fest: Solar Art Show at the Airport
DESCRIPTION:This year\, 300 newly installed ground-mounted solar panels at the Iowa City Municipal Airport came online\, powering the terminal\, runway lights\, and ambulatory hangar with clean energy. In the summer months\, the power production even exceeded the airport’s needs\, flowing onto the grid to help supply nearby structures with the additional energy. That’s worth celebrating! \nOn Monday\, Sept. 22\, from 4-6:30 p.m.\, visit the airport to see an art exhibit featuring pieces by local artists made with and inspired by solar energy and curated by Public Space One. Then try your own hand at creating solar art\, get an up close look at the airport array on one of two tours (at 4:30 and 6 p.m.) led by the industry experts who helped build the array\, and learn more about the solar capacity of your own home using a handy online portal. Local solar installers\, as well as Climate Action staff\, will be on hand to answer all your questions.

SUMMARY:Climate Fest: Resilience Hub Hang Out at The Bike Library
DESCRIPTION:Resilience Hubs are community-centered spaces that offer support based on neighborhood needs. Unlike emergency shelters\, they operate year-round to build long-term community strength but can also provide key services during community disaster and recovery efforts. Last year\, Iowa City embarked on a planning process in collaboration with two community organizations\, the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County and the Bike Library\, to envision the unique role each might play as a Resilience Hub. This year\, both have begun implementing those plans\, with solar panels installed at the Bike Library and emergency power generators on the way for NCJC. \nYou can learn more about Resilience Hubs and future plans at the Bike Library on Wednesday\, Sept. 24\, from 5-8 p.m. While there\, get started on your own home preparedness kit with an assortment of free supplies to take with you\, pick up one of the Resilience Hub zines created by Neighborhood Centers staff and Bike Library volunteers\, and check out the new rooftop solar array. Leave inspired to help make Iowa City more ready for disruptions like extreme weather events. \nTake a free bus to this event! Routes 1 and 13 have stops near Gilbert Court. \n  \nLooking for another reason to visit the Bike Library?\nOn Sunday\, Sept. 20\, riders participating in the annual Farm Cycle fundraiser\, which highlights local food resources and area bike routes\, will depart from the Bike Library for the ride. Iowa City’s Climate Action and Outreach staff will be on hand from 9-10 a.m. with free sunscreen and heat awareness info.

SUMMARY:West African Drumming 6 Week Class with Fonziba
DESCRIPTION:6 Week Class in West African Drumming with Fonziba\nWednesday Nights 7 – 8:30pm\nSept 10\, 17\, 24\, & Oct 1\, 8\, 15\n@Full Moon Studio\, 1210 S. Gilbert St. Suite 105\, Iowa City\nDrum Provided\nCost: $150 for 6 week class (you must sign up for the whole session)\nOpen to All Levels\, Beginners to Advanced\nMust Pre-Register with Fonziba by Sept. 7th\nVia Text/Email earthdrummers@gmail.com 641-919-4155\n[Come to a 2 hour workshop the week before this class starts to try it out: https://www.facebook.com/share/1CAWuokPDW/ ]\nExperience the fun and exhilaration of playing West African rhythms on authentic djembe hand drums. Unlike many musical instruments\, djembe drums are easy to play.\nInstead of one drummer playing complex rhythms on a drum set\, Africans divide their intricate rhythms into simpler parts with different drummers playing each part. When all the parts are played together\, you create an African polyrhythm\, much like a drum orchestra.\nBecause African polyrhythms are broken down into simpler parts\, they are more accessible and easy to learn. They also create a wonderful sense of connection and community because everyone has to work together to create the polyrhythm.\nWhat’s more\, the raw power of these rhythms being played by many drummers uplifts and energizes everyone.\nFonziba offers workshops and classes in West African drumming for all levels of playing ability. She shares the energetics of drumming she learned while performing for weddings in Africa and from her many African drum teachers here in the United\nStates.\nBenefits of African Hand Drumming:\n Reduces blood pressure\, stress and anxiety\n Promotes a state of well being through increased endorphins\n Improves cognitive functioning through an increase in brain white matter\n Increases the body’s immune system\n Stimulates creativity and self-expression\n Improves co-ordination\, focus and recall\n Fun\, relaxing and energizing\nFonziba Koster has a B.A. in music education. For the last 27 years has presented her African Drumming & Culture programs to thousands in schools\, libraries\, museums\, churches and retirement communities throughout the Midwest. Fonziba has studied & performed with master drummers from Mali\, Guinea\, Senegal & the Ivory Coast. She also lived & performed with a traditional family of drummers in the Ivory Coast.\nFor more info – Fonzibadrums.com\nFonziba’s bio: https://www.fonzibadrums.com/about-fonziba.html

SUMMARY:Climate Fest: Film Double Feature at Dream City
DESCRIPTION:Silver (and Green!) Screen\nThis year’s Climate Fest hosts a double feature of two short films with powerful messages. The first\, Born Curious\, explores the life of an outdoor enthusiast and explorer born in Queens. Director Julia de Guzman describes the film as “comedic and lyrical\, tense and heart- warming and will inspire even the most timid among us to live braver and bolder every day.” \nThe second film\, Green Buffalo\, follows members of the Lower Sioux Indian Community from southwest Minnesota as they seek to build affordable housing\, cut greenhouse gas emissions\, and foster community resilience using hempcrete\, a revolutionary building material. \nThe films start at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday\, Sept. 25\, at Dream City\, one of the recent Climate Action Grant awardees that has used the funding to install energy efficient equipment in its commercial kitchen utilized by local entrepreneurs as a business incubator. In between screenings\, learn more about related efforts locally from United Action for Youth and the Great Plains Action Society. \nTake a free Route 1 bus to this event!
