SUMMARY:West African Drumming 6 Week Class with Fonziba
DESCRIPTION:6 Week Class in West African Drumming with Fonziba\nWednesday Nights 7 – 8:30pm\nSept 10\, 17\, 24\, & Oct 1\, 8\, 15\n@Full Moon Studio\, 1210 S. Gilbert St. Suite 105\, Iowa City\nDrum Provided\nCost: $150 for 6 week class (you must sign up for the whole session)\nOpen to All Levels\, Beginners to Advanced\nMust Pre-Register with Fonziba by Sept. 7th\nVia Text/Email earthdrummers@gmail.com 641-919-4155\n[Come to a 2 hour workshop the week before this class starts to try it out: https://www.facebook.com/share/1CAWuokPDW/ ]\nExperience the fun and exhilaration of playing West African rhythms on authentic djembe hand drums. Unlike many musical instruments\, djembe drums are easy to play.\nInstead of one drummer playing complex rhythms on a drum set\, Africans divide their intricate rhythms into simpler parts with different drummers playing each part. When all the parts are played together\, you create an African polyrhythm\, much like a drum orchestra.\nBecause African polyrhythms are broken down into simpler parts\, they are more accessible and easy to learn. They also create a wonderful sense of connection and community because everyone has to work together to create the polyrhythm.\nWhat’s more\, the raw power of these rhythms being played by many drummers uplifts and energizes everyone.\nFonziba offers workshops and classes in West African drumming for all levels of playing ability. She shares the energetics of drumming she learned while performing for weddings in Africa and from her many African drum teachers here in the United\nStates.\nBenefits of African Hand Drumming:\n Reduces blood pressure\, stress and anxiety\n Promotes a state of well being through increased endorphins\n Improves cognitive functioning through an increase in brain white matter\n Increases the body’s immune system\n Stimulates creativity and self-expression\n Improves co-ordination\, focus and recall\n Fun\, relaxing and energizing\nFonziba Koster has a B.A. in music education. For the last 27 years has presented her African Drumming & Culture programs to thousands in schools\, libraries\, museums\, churches and retirement communities throughout the Midwest. Fonziba has studied & performed with master drummers from Mali\, Guinea\, Senegal & the Ivory Coast. She also lived & performed with a traditional family of drummers in the Ivory Coast.\nFor more info – Fonzibadrums.com\nFonziba’s bio: https://www.fonzibadrums.com/about-fonziba.html

SUMMARY:Climate Fest: Pocket Park Celebration
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, Sept. 19\, Climate Fest will kick off with a special celebration of National Parking Day\, joining other cities across the nation as they convert parking spaces into pocket parks to help reimagine how we use urban spaces. In Iowa City\, this celebration has special meaning\, as every parking ramp and meter plays a part in supporting Fare Free transit service: earlier this year when City Council voted to continue Fare Free service\, they also voted to raise parking rates to help keep the buses free. \nThat means every time you pay to park you are contributing to the City’s climate action efforts. At the same time\, Fare Free service has decreased demand on downtown parking\, freeing up more spaces when you need them most. Combined\, these efforts help make efficient use of transportation resources. \nSince beginning in 2023\, the Fare Free transit program has helped increase bus ridership in Iowa City 68% and reduced total vehicle miles driven within the city by nearly 1.8 million miles! That not only cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions\, it also makes streets safer for biking and walking by reducing the number of cars on the road. \nCome stop by the free lemonade stand in the Pop Up Parking Space Pocket Park from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the corner of Washington Street and Van Buren Street and raise a glass to this Climate Action success story! While there\, get signed up for a Root for Trees voucher to help cover 50-90% of the cost of a tree from Earl May Garden Center or Iowa City Landscaping. This popular program has helped plant more than 1\,600 trees in Iowa City yards over the last five years!
