SUMMARY:Artist Reception with Kai Plews
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa Hall Art Gallery at Kirkwood Community College welcomes an exhibition by Kai Plews: “Jumping Fences.” \nThe exhibit runs Sept. 2-26\, with a reception on Thursday\, Sept. 4\, 3:30–5 p.m. Free and open to the public. \n📍 Iowa Hall Art Gallery\, Kirkwood Community College \n———————————————————————– \nKai Plews Bio \nKai Plews is a photographer and educator from Iowa City. He is a fine art and commercial photographer with a specialization in traditional and alternative photographic processes. An Iowa native\, Kai earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from the University of South Dakota and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. \nHis work deals with the intersection of rural communities with the socio-economic and environmental impacts of agribusiness. Kai is a strong supporter of environmental and social justice especially as it relates to rural and disenfranchised communities. \nKai also teaches photography. He is currently a Photography and Design instructor here at Kirkwood Community College after moving out of an adjunct position he held for a couple of years. Kai has a strong commitment to access in education and is excited to continue that mission in a larger role here at Kirkwood Community College. \n———————————————————————– \nArtist Statement \nShow Title: Jumping Fences \nMany of the places and people who gave my life form and direction are gone\, changed\, or forgotten. I could see only glimpses of what once was\, in what is now. I hunted for those places from my memories. I only found small comfort in what was left. \nI walked the land\, jumped the fences\, and explored the secret places on the fringes of world. I discovered the stories of the land\, of the places built by sweat and toil\, on dreams and hopes. These were communities that shared their burdens and their triumphs. \nThe communities are gone now. The people\, their lives\, and stories are forgotten. Turned under the plow and returned to the earth. Progress will grow here and nothing of the old world will be left. \nThese images reflect the past\, created using a blend of old and new processes. These are places I found on my travels that are facsimiles to those places in my memory. Many of the places in these images are gone now as well. This world was overlooked and now it is forgotten. \nOnly the images remain.

SUMMARY:Art & Write Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the long\, rich\, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.\nProfessional\, aspiring\, and amateur artists alike\, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History’s magical gallery spaces after hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists. \nTell a friend\, grab a notebook\, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We’ll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we’ll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We’ll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we’ve been working on\, connecting with others (optional\, of course!). \nPlease note\, the Museum is typically closed during this time\, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open\, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.

We’ll see you on the Northside!\n————-Mars HojillaSaturday\, September 6 @ 6:00-8:00 PM\nmars hojilla (pronounced “oh-heely-uh”) is the pop-rock alter ego of Urbana-based singer/songwriter Myles Evangelista (he/they). Born to two kickass Filipino immigrants in Peoria\, Illinois\, mars’s first musical love was the household’s MAGIC SING Karaoke Machine\, which fostered in him a love of classic pop and rock by scoring him highly on Queen\, ABBA\, and Elton John songs. mars overlays his pop- and emo-inspired music with lyrics that explore every corner of human emotion and dive deep into his perspective on love\, heartbreak\, and growing pains in the transgender experience. “mars hojilla” is so named firstly for his mother\, who gave him her maiden name as a middle name\, and secondly for the cashier at the I-80 Arby’s\, who misheard his actual first name for a planet.\nmars hojilla has come a long way from his first performance under the name in June 2022\, having since recruited the musical wizardry of bassist/violinist Logan Kha (he/him) and drummer Chloe Weidl (she/her) during his five-year tenure at the University of Iowa. After breaking into the scene during Iowa City’s Mission Creek Festival in April of 2023\, the band has only brought the noise across the Midwest with each following performance.

SUMMARY:FilmScene in the Park | Men in Black
DESCRIPTION:FilmScene in the Park is presented by Dr. Suzanne Stock\, Orthodontist. \n\nFREE and open to the public \n\n“A terrifically entertaining combination of alien conspiracy fears played for laughs and French Connection-meets-Ghostbusters thrills… Men in Black is so much fun one is actually mildly disappointed when it ends.”—David Hunter\, The Hollywood Reporter \n“Its attitude is poised somewhere between the deadpan ghoulishness of the Coen brothers and a Letterman-like sense of the absurdity of life in New York’s rich multicultural stew.”—Dave Kehr\, New York Daily News \n“Smarter\, leaner\, funnier\, and more human than most entries in the genre.”—Steven D. Greydanus\, Decent Films \nWorking for a highly funded unofficial government agency\, Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) and Jay (Will Smith) are the Men in Black\, regulators of all things alien on Earth. While investigating a series of unregistered close encounters\, the MIB agents uncover the deadly plot of an intergalactic terrorist who is on a mission to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies currently living in New York City.
