SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Month
DESCRIPTION:Suicide Prevention Month is a time to raise awareness\, offer hope\, and connect individuals with lifesaving resources. CommUnity Crisis Services\, a nonprofit based in Iowa City\, is reminding Iowans that help is available 24/7 through its wide range of mental health programs. \nAs one of two organizations in the state answering the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in Iowa\, CommUnity’s trained counselors provide immediate\, compassionate support to anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts\, a mental health crisis\, or emotional distress. In addition\, CommUnity operates Mobile Crisis Response\, dispatching licensed mental health professionals directly to individuals and families in crisis throughout the community. \nBeyond direct services\, CommUnity empowers Iowans with tools to support one another. The organization offers free suicide prevention and intervention trainings\, empowering community members to recognize the warning signs of suicide and confidently connect someone in need with help. \nFor more information about CommUnity’s crisis services and training opportunities\, visit builtbycommunity.org. If you or someone you know is struggling\, text or call 988 to be connected with immediate support. To have a team of counselors dispatched to any location in Johnson or Iowa Counties\, call Your Life Iowa at 855-581-8111 and ask for mobile crisis.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception with Kai Plews
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa Hall Art Gallery at Kirkwood Community College welcomes an exhibition by Kai Plews: “Jumping Fences.” \nThe exhibit runs Sept. 2-26\, with a reception on Thursday\, Sept. 4\, 3:30–5 p.m. Free and open to the public. \n📍 Iowa Hall Art Gallery\, Kirkwood Community College \n———————————————————————– \nKai Plews Bio \nKai Plews is a photographer and educator from Iowa City. He is a fine art and commercial photographer with a specialization in traditional and alternative photographic processes. An Iowa native\, Kai earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from the University of South Dakota and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. \nHis work deals with the intersection of rural communities with the socio-economic and environmental impacts of agribusiness. Kai is a strong supporter of environmental and social justice especially as it relates to rural and disenfranchised communities. \nKai also teaches photography. He is currently a Photography and Design instructor here at Kirkwood Community College after moving out of an adjunct position he held for a couple of years. Kai has a strong commitment to access in education and is excited to continue that mission in a larger role here at Kirkwood Community College. \n———————————————————————– \nArtist Statement \nShow Title: Jumping Fences \nMany of the places and people who gave my life form and direction are gone\, changed\, or forgotten. I could see only glimpses of what once was\, in what is now. I hunted for those places from my memories. I only found small comfort in what was left. \nI walked the land\, jumped the fences\, and explored the secret places on the fringes of world. I discovered the stories of the land\, of the places built by sweat and toil\, on dreams and hopes. These were communities that shared their burdens and their triumphs. \nThe communities are gone now. The people\, their lives\, and stories are forgotten. Turned under the plow and returned to the earth. Progress will grow here and nothing of the old world will be left. \nThese images reflect the past\, created using a blend of old and new processes. These are places I found on my travels that are facsimiles to those places in my memory. Many of the places in these images are gone now as well. This world was overlooked and now it is forgotten. \nOnly the images remain.

SUMMARY:Art & Write Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the long\, rich\, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.\nProfessional\, aspiring\, and amateur artists alike\, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History’s magical gallery spaces after hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists. \nTell a friend\, grab a notebook\, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We’ll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we’ll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We’ll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we’ve been working on\, connecting with others (optional\, of course!). \nPlease note\, the Museum is typically closed during this time\, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open\, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.
