SUMMARY:Provost’s Global Forum: Cinematic Connections in a Polarized World
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Provost’s Global Forum\, Cinematic Connections in a Polarized World: How movies bring us together\, will bring together experts from across the University of Iowa campus\, the greater Iowa City area\, and around the world for film screenings\, keynote talks\, and lively conversations about how movies foster connection across cultural\, religious and generational divides. \nExperts will convene in Iowa City April 21 – 23\, 2026. \nRSVP to let organizers know which sessions you’ll attend and to help determine the amount of refreshments needed for various breaks and meals. \nRegister to attend at https://international.uiowa.edu/PGF-cinematic-connections#RSVP \nForum website & sessions schedule can be found at https://international.uiowa.edu/PGF-cinematic-connections \nAudiences can expect engaging panels on topics ranging from food and music to friendship\, romance\, and sports—paired with Q&As featuring international speakers. This event invites anyone interested in global Jewish cinemas\, storytelling\, or cross-cultural dialogue to explore how films help us laugh together\, learn together\, and imagine more connected futures. \nOn the final day of the forum\, Lawrence Baron will give the 2026 Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture. \nJoel Barkan retired from the University of Iowa in 2005\, after a career as a political science professor and the founding director of the Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS)\, the predecessor to UI International Programs. Following his retirement\, Barkan went on to have a second career in Washington\, D.C.\, as a consultant with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED)\, the World Bank\, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Many of the university’s faculty\, staff\, and administrators knew him also as a creative program-builder who made lasting contributions to international studies at the university and to the regular discussion in Iowa City of changing political\, economic\, and social circumstances in the world. UI faculty members who were his colleagues and who teach international studies proposed that Joel Barkan be recognized in a named annual campus lecture. The first annual Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture was given in 2015. \nThis year’s Provost’s Global Forum is made possible through the generous support and financial contributions from the Stanley-University of Iowa Foundation Support Organization\, UI International Programs\, the Obermann Center\, and the Department of Cinematic Arts. Activities for the forum are hosted in collaboration with the Departments of Languages\, Linguistics\, Literatures\, and Cultures; English; Religious Studies; and Spanish and Portuguese\, the UI Capitol Museum\, and the Global Memory Studies Humanities Lab. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance at 319-467-1619 or daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Fran Lebowitz
DESCRIPTION:The University of Iowa Lecture Committee presents: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFran Lebowitz\nDate: Wednesday\, Apr. 22\, 2026\nTime: 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Englert Theatre\nTickets: Free and open to the public. \nSupport provided by the Cassandra S. Foens M.D.\, F.A.C.R. Fund. \nIn a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads\, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators. \nHer essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists\, baggage-claim areas\, after-shave lotion\, adults who roller skate\, children who speak French\, or anyone who is unduly tan. The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool\, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker. \nLebowitz on special interest groups: “Special-interest publications should realize that if they are attracting enough advertising and readers to make a profit\, the interest is not so special.” \nLebowitz on frankness: “Spilling your guts is exactly as charming as it sounds.” \nLebowitz on herself: “Success didn’t spoil me\, I’ve always been insufferable.” \nThis is Lebowitz off the cuff. Her writing — pointed\, taut and economical — is equally forthright\, irascible\, and unapologetically opinionated. \nLebowitz worked odd jobs\, such as taxi driving\, belt peddling\, and apartment cleaning (“with a small specialty in Venetian blinds”)\, before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. That was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book\, a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life\, was a bestseller\, as was a second collection\, Social Studies. By turns ironic\, facetious\, deadpan\, sarcastic\, wry\, wisecracking\, and waggish\, Lebowitz’s prose is wickedly entertaining. Her two books are collected in The Fran Lebowitz Reader\, with a new preface by the author. The Fran Lebowitz Reader has been published in nine languages including French\, Korean\, Russian\, Spanish\, and Turkish. In 2021 it was published for the first time in the United Kingdom and became a bestseller. Lebowitz is also the author of the children’s book\, Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue Meet the Pandas. \nBetween 2001 to 2007\, Lebowitz had a recurring role as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama Law & Order. She also had a part in the Martin Scorsese-directed film\, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). A raconteur if ever there was one\, Lebowitz has long been a regular on various talk shows including those hosted by Jimmy Fallon\, Conan O’Brien\, and Bill Maher. In an interview with the Paris Review\, Lebowitz said “I’m not a nervous person. I’m not afraid to be on TV. I’m only afraid when I write. When I’m at my desk I feel like most people would feel if they went on TV.” \nShe can also be seen in various documentary films including the American Experience series on New York City\, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016)\, Regarding Susan Sontag (2014)\, and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990)\, among others. In 2010 Martin Scorsese directed a documentary about Lebowitz for HBO titled Public Speaking. A limited documentary series\, Pretend It’s a City\, also directed by Martin Scorsese\, premiered on Netflix in 2021\, and was nominated for the 2021 Emmys in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series category. In 2021 she was awarded the Forte dei Marmi Festival della Satira Lifetime Achievement Award and was a 2021 Foreign Press Honorary Awardee – an award given by the Foreign Press Correspondents Association & Club USA. \nLebowitz was named to Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2008. She remains a style icon. Lebowitz lives in New York City\, as she does not believe that she would be allowed to live anywhere else. \nThis event is sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:West Music Hosts Free Restring & Recycle Events in Coralville
DESCRIPTION:Musicians in Coralville will have the opportunity to refresh their instruments and recycle used strings during free Restring & Recycle events at West Music on April 24–25. The events invite local musicians to bring in used strings from any brand\, have their instruments restrung with D’Addario® strings\, and recycle the old ones through Playback\, an instrument string recycling program created by D’Addario and powered by TerraCycle®. Customers are also encouraged to bring a $10+ cash donation to support UAY\, a local nonprofit providing music lessons\, rehearsal space\, and recording studio access to young people. Participating locations include: \nWest Music Coralville — 1212 5th Street\, Coralville\, IA — Friday\, April 24\, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM & Saturday\, April 25\, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM \n“West Music has always looked for ways to go above and beyond for our customers and our community\,” said Ryan Brondyke\, West Music. “Partnering with D’Addario on the Playback Restring and Recycle event lets us do both\, giving musicians fresh strings while making sure the old ones don’t end up in a landfill.” \nFor musicians\, replacing worn strings is part of maintaining sound quality and performance — but it also creates a surprising amount of waste. Industry estimates indicate that approximately 1.5 million pounds of musical instrument strings are discarded in the United States each year — equivalent to the weight of more than two and a half Statues of Liberty. \nThe event at West Music is among several taking place at music retailers nationwide throughout Earth Month\, giving musicians an easy way to recycle used strings while keeping their instruments performing at their best.\nPlayback\, an instrument string recycling program created by D’Addario and powered by TerraCycle\, gives musicians a responsible alternative to sending used strings to a landfill or incinerator. Once collected through the program\, the materials are recycled so they can be used again: metal strings are smelted into new alloys\, while nylon strings are recycled for industrial plastic applications. The program has collected and recycled more than 16 million strings\, and counting. \nMusicians interested in recycling through Playback can visit www.daddario.com/playback. For more information on the Restring & Recycle event\, please contact West Music at (319) 277-1000. \nAbout D’Addario & Company\, Inc. \nD’Addario is the world’s largest manufacturer of musical instrument accessories\, marketed under several product brands: D’Addario Fretted\, D’Addario Orchestral\, D’Addario Woodwinds\, Promark Drumsticks\, Evans Drumheads\, and Puresound Snare Wires. A family-owned and operated business with roots dating back to the 17th century\, D’Addario now has over 1\,100 employees worldwide\, and manufactures 95% of its products in the U.S. while utilizing Toyota’s Lean manufacturing principles. D’Addario musical accessories are distributed in 120 countries\, serve more than 3\,300 U.S. retailers\, all major e-commerce sites\, and are the preferred choice of musicians worldwide.\nThe D’Addario Foundation believes in the power of music to unlock creativity\, boost self-confidence\, and enhance academics. D’Addario also reinforces its role as a social and environmental leader with initiatives such as Playback and Play.Plant.Preserve. \nAbout TerraCycle \nTerraCycle is an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions\, creating and operating first-of-their-kind platforms in recycling\, recycled materials\, and reuse. Across 18 countries\, TerraCycle is on a mission to eliminate the idea of waste and develop practical solutions for today’s complex waste challenges. The company engages an expansive multi-stakeholder community\, from Fortune 500 companies to schools and households\, across a wide range of accessible programs and has raised millions for schools and nonprofits since its founding more than 20 years ago. SUMMARY:An Interactive Author Event with Children's Author Philip Stead
DESCRIPTION:Interactive Author Event with Philip Stead \nJoin us for a delightful evening celebrating children’s literature with award-winning author and illustrator Philip Stead—just for grown-up fans who still believe in the magic of a great story.\nPhilip is beloved for classics like A Sick Day for Amos McGee\, Bear Has a Story to Tell\, The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine\, Amos McGee Misses the Bus\, and more. On Friday\, April 24\, he and his wife will host an interactive book talk paired with an informal (and very fun) children’s literature trivia session. Think thoughtful conversation\, playful nostalgia\, and plenty of chances to nerd out with fellow adult lovers of kids’ books.\n Your book purchase = 1 ticket to the eventPhilip’s newest book\, releasing April 7\,A Potion\, a Powder\, a Little Bit of Magic: Or\, Like Lightning in an Umbrella Storm\,is now available for preorder—and purchasing a copy secures your spot at this special evening.\nPurchase Here >>>> bit.ly/PhilipSteadEvent\nThis event is designed for adults who have a passion for children’s literature and storytelling\, making it a fabulous way to connect with others who never quite outgrew picture books and imaginative tales.\nAbout the New BookA plucky young goatkeeper sets out on a wildly misadventurous rescue mission in this laugh-out-loud debut novel—perfect for fans of Kate DiCamillo and Lemony Snicket.\nIn a kingdom ruled by a capricious king\, the castle rests on the backs of twenty-four goats\, and the well-being of those goats rests on one girl: Bernadette. When a goat escapes\, she teams up with a very forgetful wizard and a Boat That Does Not Grant Wishes to bring it home.\nThe journey is anything but ordinary. Chapters appear out of order. The ending may be the beginning. The author becomes a character himself. Along the way\, readers are gifted twenty-four morals of questionable wisdom and a whole lot of heart.\nWith broken fourth walls\, running gags\, and underdog triumphs\, Philip Stead’s first novel is a joyful\, one-of-a-kind celebration of storytelling itself.

If your resources & passion make it possible\, you can help sustain Day Party with a supporter pass purchase. These generous contributions will fortify our efforts to build arts and connection in our community. A portion of each supporter pass will be processed as a tax-deductible donation. For more info on supporting\, email us here: missioncreekmidwest@gmail.com \nFrom the founders of Mission Creek Festival and Brink\, we present Day Party: a one-day\, intimate arts experience rooted in food\, literature\, and music. Day Party embodies the magic of finding new art\, friends\, and community during the expansive daylight hours of a late-spring weekend. Equal parts wit and grit\, we are a gathering place for local and Midwestern creativity. The event runs from early afternoon to early evening; there will be live music\, readings & conversations\, and a range of food experiences from local chefs. The festivities take place in a creative nook on Iowa City’s southside\, hosted at emerging and iconic spaces: Little Village\, Plated Table\, Trumpet Blossom Cafe\, and Public Space One.
