SUMMARY:A Case for the Existence of God
DESCRIPTION:A prescient meditation on human resilience from the playwright and screenwriter of last year’s Academy Award-winning film The Whale. Set inside a small office in southern Idaho\, two men meet to go through the confusing and often maddening application process for a loan. But while facts like income and interest are seemingly cut and dry\, relationships are not so simple. SUMMARY:Cedar County Cobras
DESCRIPTION:Cedar County Cobras play American roots and blues music from the last century. The music takes on an “old time” blues feel that would most likely be found in a juke-joint down a gravel road in rural Iowa. Arriving with an upright bass\, foot-drum\, mandolin\, and a collection of guitars this duo plays music that is best described as “boot-stompin” delta blues and roots blues. Foy released his second LP\, Joy of Nothing\, in 2013 on Glassnote Records which led to further critical praise and invites on tours from Ed Sheeran\, Bonnie Raitt\, Marcus Foster\, Snow Patrol and Sir Elton John. Additionally\, Foy has headlined tours globally to sell-out crowds. \nFoy was the second artist signed to Gingerbread Man Records\, Ed Sheeran’s label division within Atlantic Records. Foy’s debut recording with the label\, The Wild Swan\, was Executive Produced by Sir Elton John and released in 2016. In 2019\, Foy released two companion albums\, From Muscle Shoals and To Memphis\, recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama and Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis. His songwriting credits include co-writing four cuts on Ed Sheeran’s 2017 album Divide\, the title track on Sam Smith’s latest album Gloria and collaborations with Alicia Keys\, Rag N Bone Man\, Keith Urban\, Kacey Musgraves\, Miranda Lambert\, Plan B and Rudimental. \nFoy Vance’s 2021 album\, Signs Of Life\, marked Foy’s second studio album ‘proper’ on Gingerbread Man Records and was a testament to his abilities as a songwriter. This year\, he’ll be heading out on the road once again to play songs from one of his most impactful album’s\, as well as tracks from the rest of his poignant discography for the Regarding the Joy of Nothing Tour.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Equity and Human Rights will kick off the new year of The Lens webinar series with “Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years\,” presented by Bill Bigelow via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday\, Jan. 25\, 2024. \nThe Lens Webinar Series is a monthly complimentary program offered by the Office that expands conversations on equity\, inclusion\, belonging\, and access. \nAbout the program \nToo many children still learn that “Columbus discovered America.” But that myth teaches harmful lessons — not only about Columbus and the Taíno people who Columbus encountered\, but about whose lives matter in the school curriculum\, whose voices count\, and whose don’t. In this slide presentation\, Bigelow examines children’s literature on Columbus’s voyages to the Americas to explore the “secret education” that young people absorb. He also will share how we can help young people think more critically and thoughtfully about history – and our world today. \nHow to register \nPreregistration is required. You can register at this link \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nhqG7lYCRk-89pyId9VcOQ#/registration

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Iowa City: How Sappho Shook Things Up
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Iowa City presents: “How Sappho Shook Things Up\,” a profile of an ancient Greek woman whose life and lyric poems challenged assumptions about gender\, with Celsiana Warwick\, assistant professor of Classics at the University of Iowa. \nThe ancient Greek poet Sappho has the status of icon among many queer women. So renowned is she for the love poetry that she wrote for other women that the modern term “lesbian” ultimately was derived from the island of Lesbos\, where she lived. But what do we actually know about her? \nJoin Celsiana Warwick\, a scholar of Greek poetry and gender and sexuality in the ancient world\, for a close examination of the life and work of a woman who continues to inspire love and fascination even though only fragments of her poetry survive. \nProfessor Warwick will look at what information we have about Sappho’s life\, sexual orientation\, and relationships with other women.  Among the questions she’ll tackle:  Is it valid to apply modern terminology like “lesbian” or “bisexual” to people from ancient cultures who had very different ideas about sexuality and sexual attraction than we do? \nWe’ll consider how Sappho’s poetry challenged the patriarchal norms of gender and sexuality in ancient Greece and look at the ways in which her poems resonate with the experiences of modern women and queer people. \nNormative ancient Greek male sexuality was based on strict hierarchies of power that assigned an active\, dominating role to adult men and passive\, subordinated roles to their social inferiors. Sappho\, by contrast\, portrays her relationships with women as more egalitarian\, with partners switching roles or doing away with hierarchies altogether. \nTensions between such disparate thoughts about sexuality and gender continue to be felt today. Is there something we can learn from a poet at work more than 2\,600 years ago? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus 12 percent state and local sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) \nImage: From an 1864 Simeon Solomon painting of Sappho and Erinna in a Garden at Mytilene (Tate Gallery / Wikimedia Commons).
