SUMMARY:Beth Orton
DESCRIPTION:Englert Presents\nBeth Orton\nLive @ The James Theater \n—-On-Sale Schedule—-\nMember Presale: Begins Wednesday\, January 17 @ 10:00 AM CT\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, January 19 @ 10:00 AM CT \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$35.00 + Fees – General Admission (purchased in advance)\n$40.00 + Fees – General Admission (purchased day of show)\n$20.00 – General Admission – Student (w/ ID) \n—-Show Description—-\nEnglish singer/songwriter Beth Orton’s latest album Weather Alive was one of the most critically acclaimed records of 2022\, landing on year-end ‘Best of 2022’ lists from NPR\, Pitchfork\, and The New York Times—the latter of which praised Orton for her “modal vocal phrases and marveling [stories].” Pitchfork also named the title track a Best New Track\, calling it “a slow-burning tour de force\,” while The Late Late Show with James Corden invited Orton and her band to perform album highlight “Fractals.” \nOrton self-produced Weather Alive\, laying the foundations of the album on an upright piano that she installed in her garden shed at home in London. When the time was right\, Orton invited an incredible group of collaborators to join her across the album’s eight tracks\, including jazz poet Alabaster DePlume\, The Smile drummer Tom Skinner\, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and Mercury Prize nominated bassist Tom Herbert of The Invisible. The musicians locked naturally into Orton’s sensibilities\, expanding the emotive and dream-like world she’d created and conjuring a deeply meditative atmosphere that remains long after the final note has evaporated. \nOrton has long been regarded as possessing one of the most unique and expressive voices in music – a voice that has grown evermore rich and wise over time. Her 1996 debut\, Trailer Park\, pioneered a synthesis of electronic and acoustic sounds\, while its 1999 follow-up\, Central Reservation\, garnered international success. Further albums like the Jim O’Rourke-produced Comfort of Strangers and 2016’s largely electronic Kidsticks co-produced by Orton deepened the breadth of her craft. A turbulent life that progressed with long periods of ill health slowed her down and made for experience that she was only able to process through music. She began to spend more time making music at the piano than on guitar and the songs she wrote turned into the eight-track Weather Alive\, the first album she’s ever self-produced in her nearly 30-year career.

SUMMARY:Why Women Peacebuilders Matter with FREE LUNCH
DESCRIPTION:MEAL AND MEETING SPACE PROVIDED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE IOWA CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY\nThe U.S. Institute of Peace(USIP) presents the Women Building Peace Award (WBPA) annually to an extraordinary international woman peacebuilder. During this International Women’s Day event\, Dr. Kathleen Kuehnast\, Director of Women\, Peace\, and Security at USIP\, will discuss gender-inclusive peacebuilding and present the work of 2023’s WBPA finalists.\n“Research confirms that the security of a nation is directly tied to the security and status of its women. At the same time\, violent conflict upends and polarizes societies\, disrupting social structures and gender roles. An expanding evidence base indicates that peacebuilding and security programs and policies are more successful when they address the different impacts of conflict on men\, women\, and gender and sexual minorities and ensure full participation of diverse women in the design and implementation of solutions.”\n(https://www.usip.org/programs/women-peace-and-security-wps).Dr. Kathleen Kuehnast is the director of the Women\, Peace\, and Security portfolio at USIP\, where she oversees the Institute’s work on the gendered impacts of violent conflict\, drawing upon U.N. Security Council Resolution 1325\, emphasizing the critical role women play in all aspects of peacebuilding. Since 2012\, Kuehnast has served as a founding partner of the Missing Peace Initiative\, which is focused on ending conflict-related sexual violence by bringing a survivor-centered focus to research\, policy\, and practice. Since 2010\, she has also spearheaded the U.S. Civil Society Work Group on Women\, Peace\, and Security\, of which USIP is the secretariat. Before USIP\, Kuehnast worked in the international development field\, primarily with the World Bank\, where her role as a senior social scientist included research and project management on the thematic streams of women and poverty\, social capital\, and community-driven development in fragile and post-conflict societies. Her regional expertise is in Central Asia\, where she lived for several years during the initial years of the post-Soviet period in Kyrgyzstan\, completing her doctoral dissertation research.\nREGISTER HERE\nWhy Women Peacebuilders MatterMARCH 08\, 2024\, 12:00PM – 1:00PMIOWA CITY PUBLIC LIBRARYALSO STREAMING ONLINE: https://www.youtube.com/@thelibrarychannelDOORS OPEN AT 11:30AM – JOIN US FOR SOCIAL CONNECTION AND A MEAL!\nPLEASE RSVP BY MARCH 4th – SO WE KNOW HOW MUCH FOOD TO ORDER\n\nLearn more about Dr. Kuehnast: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathleen-kuehnast-52540a2b/

SUMMARY:Age\, Money\, and Desire: The Navigation of Intimate Marketplaces by Older Women and the Reconfiguration of Gender Relations in South Korea
DESCRIPTION:Join the Korean Studies Research Network\, an International Programs (IP) affinity group\, for this virtual event presented by Dr. Yu-Ri Kim\, postdoctoral research scholar in sociology at the University of Iowa. \nRegister here \nWhile intimacy in later life is commonly thought to be confined to domestic and neighborhood spaces\, older adults in South Korea have challenged existing norms of age and gender through their non-domestic intimate pursuits. Drawing on ethnography in Seoul\, South Korea\, the presentation analyzes the structure of desire and desirability in which women actively devise strategies for their intimate pleasure. \nDr. Yu-Ri Kim is a postdoctoral research scholar in sociology at the University of Iowa. Drawing on fieldwork on the subculture of older adults in South Korea\, she is working on a book project that presents the intimate economy in the era of demographic aging. Her work has received recognition from the Association of Anthropology\, Gerontology\, and the Life Course (AAGE); the Washington University Institute for Korean Studies; and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. \nThe Korean Studies Research Network aims to bring together scholars whose research focuses on Korea-related topics and to provide mentoring to the younger generation of scholars. It serves as a platform to facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scholars and graduate students at the University of Iowa and institutions of higher education in the Midwest through seminars\, speaker series\, and workshops. \nThis event is made possible through generous support from the Korea Foundation. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance by email at daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu or call 319-467-1619.
