SUMMARY:Martha Graham Dance Company
DESCRIPTION:An indispensable dance company celebrates 100 years\, bringing is founder’s classic works to the stage alongside new work by contemporary choreographers. Martha Graham—an icon among 20th century artistic icons—radically expanded the dance vocabulary\, and her work has captivated audiences worldwide while influencing generations of artists. \nIn its centennial season\, the Martha Graham Dance Company comes to Hancher to perform Graham’s 1947 duet Errand into the Maze based on the myth of Thesus and the Minotaur\, Agnes de Mille’s classic Rodeo with Aaron Copland’s beloved score reorchestrated in a bluegrass style by Punch Brothers violinist Gabe Witcher\, and Hofesh Shechter’s Cave inspired by the rave scene. \nThe program will open with Graham’s Panorama\, which was choreographed in 1935 and is an electric example of the modernism of its time. The work will be performed by more than 20 student dancers from the University of Iowa Department of Dance. \nPart of Hancher’s 51st season \nLearn more at https://hancher.uiowa.edu/2023-24/martha-graham-dance-company

SUMMARY:The Reader Next Door Reading Series with Louisa Hall
DESCRIPTION:Iowa is unique in its high concentration of writers of every stripe: investigative journalists\, poets and novelists\, spoken word artists\, translators\, playwrights and children’s book authors. This limited seating reading series offers a chance to say “hello” to your neighbor writers\, and to hear them read from and talk about their most recently published work\, or work in progress. Join us quarterly as the PorchLight team hosts a different beloved “writer next door.” \n  \nOur Spring Reader: \nLouisa Hall is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Iowa.  She is the author of the critically acclaimed and award-winning novels Reproduction\, Trinity\, and Speak.  She is the recipient of fellowships from Macdowell\, Yaddo\, The T.S. Eliot Foundation\, and La Maison de Poesie. Her poems have been published in The New Republic\, Southwest Review and other journals.

SUMMARY:Five for Fighting with String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Englert Presents\nFive for Fighting with String Quartet\nwith James Tutson \n—-On-Sale Schedule—-\nMember Presale: Begins Wednesday\, January 17 @ 10:00 AM CT\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, January 19 @ 10:00 AM CT \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$55.00 + Fees – Premium\n$45.00 + Fees – Reserved\n$38.00 + Fees – Member\n$20.00 + Fees – Student (w/ID) \n—-Show Description—-\nThe only way for a story to progress is to turn the page. John Ondrasik — the songwriter and performer known as the platinum-selling\, Grammy-nominated\, Five For Fighting — knows this well. In the two decades since his first major single\, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” hit the stratosphere\, the artist has both evolved and come back ’round full circle. Creativity\, if nothing else\, is paradoxical. \nTo date\, Five For Fighting\, has released six studio LPs\, including the platinum certified America Town and The Battle for Everything; and the top-10 charting Two Lights\, along with an EP and live albums. \nOndrasik has penned major hits\, including the chart-topping “100 Years\,” “The Riddle\,” “Chances\,” “World\,” and “Easy Tonight\,” which have earned tens of millions of streams and place him as a top-10 Hot Adult Contemporary artist for the 2000s. The reflective “100 Years” has joined “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” as part of the American Songbook and continues to stand the test of time at weddings\, birthdays\, graduations\, memorials\, and many a home video. Five For Fighting’s music has also been featured in more than 350 films\, television shows\, and commercials\, including the Oscar-winning The Blind Side\, Hawaii Five-O\, The Sopranos and the CBS drama\, Code Black. \nReferencing Fight For Fighting’s success in the 2000s\, AllMusic called Ondrasik “one of the decade’s leading balladeers.” But perhaps his biggest achievement is performing “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” at the 2001 Concert for New York\, a benefit show at Madison Square Garden that honored first responders and the fallen about a month after the tragic September 11th attacks. Ondrasik performed alongside other big-name artists like Paul McCartney\, The Who\, Elton John\, Billy Joel\, and dozens more. \nNow\, though\, what once was a dream is a reality. Buoyed by his unique falsetto voice and his prowess on the piano — a skill bestowed to him by his piano teacher mother — Ondrasik has made a solid reputation for himself in the world of songwriting and performance\, selling upwards of three million albums over his career. Not only does he tour with his popular string quartet and play solo and rock band gigs\, but he is also a high demand keynote speaker in which he combines themes of creativity and innovation with his business acumen. \nWhat motivates him musically now? He wants to promote dialogue. He’s set to speak his mind. In song\, with the piano. \nOndrasik doesn’t shy away from nuance. He embraces it and seeks it — just as he does the next chorus\, the next verse. It’s what artists and freethinkers do\, after all. \nIt’s his gift to share. \nHis decided obligation\, too.

SUMMARY:Sō Percussion and Caroline Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Composer and vocalist Caroline Shaw returns for a second collaboration in this season after performing with the Attacca Quartet in September (a Shaw composition is also on the program for Roomful of Teeth’s performance in November). This time\, the collab is with the adventuresome Sō Percussion\, a quartet that has truly redefined chamber music for the 21st century leading The New Yorker to describe the ensemble’s music-making as an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy\, rigor and bedlam.” \nTogether\, Shaw and the quartet composed Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part\, a journey across the soul’s landscape undertaken through distinctly contemporary songs. The artists drew inspiration from sources as varied as James Joyce\, ABBA\, American roots music\, plainchant\, Christian hymns\, and stories from the Old Testament to create a set of 10 songs that explore working in the soil as a metaphor for collaboration and creativity. \nThe concert will open with Go Placidly in Haste\, a new work composed by Sō Percussion’s Jason Treuting that will be performed with Iowa Percussion from the University of Iowa School of Music. \nFor these performances\, the audience will be seated on the Hadley Stage with the musicians to take in the full power and vibrancy of the music. \nPresented in collaboration with Iowa Percussion at the University of Iowa School of Music \nPart of Hancher’s 51st season \nLearn more at https://hancher.uiowa.edu/2023-24/so-percussion

These table reservations do not include tickets\, tickets must be purchased separately. \n—-On-Sale Schedule—-\nMember Presale: Begins Thursday\, January 18 @ 10 AM CT\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, January 19 @ 10:00 AM CT \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$20.00 + Fees – General Admission (purchased in advance)\n$25.00 + Fees – General Admission (purchased day of show)\n$15.00 + Fees – General Admission – Student (w/ ID) \n—-Show Description—-\nFruition’s newest album\, Broken at the Break of Day\, shines a light on all five members of the band\, whether it’s on the traded lead vocals of “Dawn” or the irresistible rhythms of “Where Can I Turn.” As it’s been for more than a decade\, their sound is hard to define\, but the songwriting and the harmonies tie their diverse influences together. \nFor example\, “Counting the Days” is a poignant love letter\, while “For You” shows the exasperation of maintaining a relationship on the road. The band’s most electrifying rock moment\, “Do What You Want\,” is then followed by “Nothing More Than Spinning\,” which sounds like a folk song interpreted by Queen. The stunning vocal blend heard in “At the End of the Day” brings Broken at the Break of Day to its beautiful and touching conclusion. \nAlthough it’s a challenge to categorize\, the seven-song album feels whole because of the band’s dedication to honesty as well as harmony. The Portland\, Oregon-based band is composed of Jay Cobb Anderson (electric guitar\, vocals)\, Kellen Asebroek (piano\, acoustic guitar vocals)\, Jeff Leonard (bass)\, Mimi Naja (mandolin\, electric guitar\, vocals) and Tyler Thompson (drums). Broken at the Break of Day\, recorded in Thompson’s basement in between tour dates\, follows the band’s exceptional 2019 album\, Wild as the Night. \nThe prolific band will release Wild as the Night and Broken at the Break of Day together on vinyl as well\, giving listeners the option to hear the music as a collective body of work in a playlist-focused era. \nWith a renewed focus on harnessing the energy of the live experience\, Wild as the Night and Broken at the Break of Day allow listeners to get a glimpse of all five band members doing what they do best on stage\, whether they’re opening for the Wood Brothers\, Greensky Bluegrass\, and Jack Johnson\, or playing at festivals like Telluride Bluegrass\, Bonnaroo\, and DelFest. \nTheir unmistakable vocal blend first revealed itself in 2008 when Anderson tagged along with Asebroek and Naja for an afternoon of busking in Portland. Drawing on their string-band influences early on\, they released their debut album Hawthorne Hoedown that same year. Thompson joined the band in 2011\, shortly after hearing the band members singing together in a friend’s attic. Leonard came on board in 2015. Broken at the Break of Day is the band’s tenth release\, including EPs and LPs.
