SUMMARY:Willy Tea Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Willy Tea Taylor\nwith Jordan Smart\nLive @ Trumpet Blossom Cafe \n—-On-Sale Schedule—-\nMember Presale: Begins Wednesday\, February 7 @ 10:00 AM CT\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, February 9 @ 10:00 AM CT \nOnline ticket sales for this event will end 6 hours prior to the performance time. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door of the venue. \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$20.00 + Fees – General Admission\n$25.00 + Fees – General Admission (Day of Show) \n—-Show Description—-\nThere is no question that Willy Tea Taylor’s life as a singer/songwriter was predetermined – his role realized the moment he wrote his first song. His inspirations drawn from two separate wells; Living the life of a cattleman’s kid and experiencing true visionaries music like Greg Brown\, John Hartford\, and Guy Clark. The image of Guy Clark and friends sitting around the kitchen table loaded with ashtrays full of butts\, half-smoked cigarettes\, food\, and booze on one Christmas Eve in 1975 burned into Taylor’s soul. Those guys\, swapping songs without pretense\, lit Willy Tea’s fire. And ever since\, its led purpose with passion – finding a hang by curating relationships through musical friendships that get him closer to his own Clark style kitchen table. \nFrom his early days co-fronting The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit\, to singing solo in countless cowboy bars\, to pitching countless wiffle ball games\, Willy Tea has never lost the vision. Now Willy Tea Taylor has taken his vision of the “hero hang” on the road. and his talented traveling band The Fellership is made up of his fantastically talented buds who play Willy’s songs with a brand of reckless abandon and utter humility that spits in the face of pretense. The way The Fellership plays Will’s songs is the way they demand to be played and\, in their short time together\, they have been awe-ing every audience lucky enough to see them.

SUMMARY:Oumou Sangaré
DESCRIPTION:“The Songbird of Wassoulou” brings the music of Mali to The Englert’s stage. Oumou Sangaré is an icon whose powerful music and fierce feminism have inspired artist from Alicia Keys to Aya Nakamura to Beyoncé. The songs on her most recent record\, Timbuktu\, were largely written in Baltimore during the lockdowns of the COVID pandemic. The album blends the sounds of traditional West African instruments with those of instruments most associated with the blues. Sangaré will share music from this ambitious album as well as sounds from throughout her acclaimed career. How acclaimed? The New Yorker says\, “Percussive\, danceable\, and haunting\, the singer’s visionary mix is the primary reason that her voice has come to carry as much respect as Aretha Franklin’s.” \nPresented in collaboration with The Englert Theatre \nPart of Hancher’s 51st season \nLearn more at https://hancher.uiowa.edu/2023-24/oumou-sangare

The novel was a finalist for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize from the Center for Fiction and was an Oprah Magazine Top Ten Pick of the Month. SUMMARY:North Korea’s Drift Towards “Our Style” Electronic Music (1975-1991)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Korean Studies Research Network\, an International Programs (IP) affinity group\, for this virtual event presented by Dr. Peter Moody\, research professor at Korea University’s Research Institute of Korean Studies. \nThis lecture will present the emergence of North Korean-style electronic music\, which not only enlivened indigenous Korean music with a fresh timbre\, but also aimed to raise the quality of electronic music worldwide in a healthier direction. \nRegister here \nAs the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) state sought to spread its ideological messages and fervor to a new generation of North Koreans who had not actively experienced war mobilization\, it increasingly drew on the capitalist world’s soundscape\, adopting orchestration and arrangement practices of global music genres such as rock and disco. At the same time it incorporated these outside forms of entertainment\, it also emphasized nation over class in artistic production. The outcome of this tinkering and (North) Korean exceptionalism was the emergence of “our-style electronic music.” \nDr. Peter Moody is a research professor at Korea University’s Research Institute of Korean Studies. He recently received his PhD from Columbia University and is a historian specializing in the industrialization\, ideological development\, intellectual history\, mass media\, and cultural politics of the two Koreas. He is currently preparing a book manuscript titled Mobilizing Musicians and the Making of North Korea. \nThe Korean Studies Research Network aims to bring together scholars whose research focuses on Korea-related topics and to provide mentoring to the younger generation of scholars. It serves as a platform to facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scholars and graduate students at the University of Iowa and institutions of higher education in the Midwest through seminars\, speaker series\, and workshops. \nThis event is made possible through generous support from the Korea Foundation. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance at 319-467-1619 or daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu.

Every $1 donated will be matched by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with $2 so more endangered wetlands can be saved. If you’d like to learn more\, please visit this link. \n—-Show Description—-\nThe Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. For the better part of two decades\, they’ve cemented their reputation as freethinking songwriters\, road warriors\, and community builders\, creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who’ve grown alongside them through the years. That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero\, the band’s eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape\, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies\, Heart is the Hero is stocked with songs that target not only the heart\, but the head and hips\, too. \n“We love records that come from the era of less tracks and more care\,” explains co-founder Oliver Wood. “When you use a computer during the tracking process\, you have an infinite number of tracks at your disposal\, which implies that nothing is permanent\, and everything can be fixed. Tape gives you limitations that force you to be creative and intentional. You don’t look at the music on a screen; you listen to it\, and you learn to focus on the feeling of the performance.” \nThroughout Heart Is The Hero\, those performances are matched by the visceral storytelling and songwriting chops that have turned The Wood Brothers into Grammy-nominated leaders of American roots music\, even as their music reaches far beyond the genre’s borders. The strippeddown swagger of “Pilgrim” underscores Oliver’s reminder to slow down and experience each moment as an interactive observer\, rather than a passive tourist. A similar theme anchors “Between the Beats\,” where Oliver draws upon a meditation technique — maintaining one’s focus on the space between heartbeats — to reach a new level of presence. The gentle sway of country soul gem “Rollin’ On\,” featuring horns by Matt Glassmeyer and Roy Agee\, expounds on the timehonored tradition of love as the guiding light through darkness\, while “Mean Man World” finds Chris Wood singing about his responsibilities as a father whose young daughter is poised to inherit an uncertain future. “Line Those Pockets” is a universal call for mercy and understanding over materialism. “Everybody’s just trying to be happy\, so put your money away; line those pockets with grace\,” the band sings in three-part harmony during the song’s chorus\, which emphasizes compassion over cash as the world’s true currency. Together\, these songs offer a snapshot of a spirited\, independent-minded group at the peak of its powers\, always pushing forward and seeking to evolve beyond what’s come before. \n“There’s still acoustic guitar\, upright bass\, and percussion on this album — things people use all the time — but we’re always thinking\, ‘How can we make this sound like us\, but not like something we’ve already done?'” Oliver says. “Sometimes\, the only way to do that is to get weird.” \nThat sense of exploration pumps its way through Heart is the Hero like lifeblood. Arriving on the heels of 2019’s Live at The Fillmore\, 2020’s Kingdom In My Mind\, and Oliver Wood’s solo album Always Smilin’ — all of which were released on Honey Jar Records\, the band’s independent label — Heart is the Hero is bold\, bright\, and singularly creative\, a fully realized collective effort ultimately greater than the sum of its parts. Perhaps that’s to be expected from a group whose willingness to experiment has earned acclaim from Rolling Stone and NPR\, as well as an annual touring schedule of sold-out music halls and theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. Ask The Wood Brothers\, though\, and they’ll tell you to expect the unexpected. \n“We are never satisfied if we are not searching for new musical recipes\,” says Jano Rix\, nodding to the uncharted territory that Heart is the Hero covers. Chris Wood agrees\, adding\, “We are one of those bands that isn’t easily categorized. We know what our strengths are\, but we can’t help but push the envelope\, as well. It’s too much fun.”

Always contending with her father\, consumed with passion for her lover\, and ferociously devoted to her children\, Artemisia is a modern woman before her time. SUMMARY:WorldCanvass: Connecting Iowa with the World and the World with Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Join International Programs for a special WorldCanvass event entitled\, “Connecting Iowa with the World and the World with Iowa.” This event will be streamed virtually over Zoom. \nRegister here \nIowa and Kosovo have enjoyed decades of international cooperation and are well-established sister states. Building upon that foundation\, the University of Iowa (UI)\, Iowa State University (ISU)\, and the Kosova Education Center (KEC) are collaborating on a $4.7 million USAID-funded cooperative agreement (the Activity) to develop private sector partnerships that will strengthen higher education. \nIn the opening segment\, WorldCanvass guests from Iowa and Kosovo will discuss how\, through the Activity\, they are working to strengthen partnerships between the private sector and academic institutions\, and how they are supporting the development of market-oriented and experiential learning approaches in both the information and communication technology and agriculture sectors in Kosovo. \nThe program concludes with a celebration of UI Global Student Awardees Katherine Lyu and Amira Nash\, whose extraordinary commitment to international education has enriched both the UI campus and Iowa’s global reputation. \nSee program details here \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance at 319-467-1619 or daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu.
