SUMMARY:Indigo Girls
DESCRIPTION:Indigo Girls\nwith Lucy Wainwright Roche \nSponsored by: The Marcus-Fitzpatrick Team of Blank & McCune \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$89.00 + Fees – Reserved Seating – Premium\n$69.00 + Fees – Reserved Seating\n$59.00 + Fees – General Admission – Friend/Member \n—-Show Description—-\nReleased in 1989\, Indigo Girls’ eponymous major label debut sold over two million copies under the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears” and turned Indigo Girls into one of the most successful folk duos in history. Over a thirty-five-year career that began in clubs around their native Atlanta\, Georgia\, the multi-Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray has recorded sixteen studio albums\, sold over 15 million records\, and built a dedicated\, enduring following across the globe. Rolling Stone describes them as the “ideal duet partners.” Committed and uncompromising activists\, they work on issues like immigration reform (El Refugio)\, LGBTQ advocacy\, education (Imagination Library)\, death penalty reform\, and Native American rights. They are co-founders of Honor the Earth\, a non-profit dedicated to the survival of sustainable Native communities\, Indigenous environmental justice\, and green energy solutions. \nTheir latest record\, Look Long is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date. “We joke about being old\, but what is old when it comes to music? We’re still a bar band at heart\,” says Saliers. “While our lyrics and writing approach may change\, our passion for music feels the same as it did when we were 25-years-old.” “As time has gone on\, our audience has become more expansive and diverse\, giving me a sense of joy\,” she adds. To hear those collective voices raise into one\, singing along and overpowering the band itself\, one realizes the importance Indigo Girls’ music has in this moment. In our often-terrifying present\, we are all in search of a daily refuge\, a stolen hour or two\, to engage with something that brings us joy\, perspective\, or maybe just calm. As one bar band once put it\, “We go to the doctor\, we go to the mountains…we go to the Bible\, we go through the work out.” For millions\, they go to the Indigo Girls. On Look Long they’ll find a creative partnership certain of its bearings\, forging a way forward.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Iowa City: Exploring Mars\, Understanding Earth
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Iowa City presents: “Exploring Mars\, Understanding Earth\,” a look at missions to the Red Planet and how they’re shedding light on our own’s past\, with Valerie Payré\, assistant professor in the University of Iowa’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and former member of the team driving the Curiosity rover on Mars’s surface. \nWhile most of us merely look up at Mars\, Professor Valerie Payré takes in a much closer view. An expert on Mars geology\, she had a hand in driving Curiosity around that planet’s surface and analyzes data received by Martian rovers and spacecrafts. \nYou don’t need to travel any further than the Graduate Iowa City hotel to join Dr. Payré for a fascinating discussion of what we’re learning from such work. \nShe’ll present the up-to-date data from spacecrafts orbiting around Mars and from Mars rovers\, discussing traces of liquid water that existed far in the past and the current existence on Mars of polar ice and diverse volcanic activity. She’ll discuss whether life could exist on Mars and talk about how Mars and Earth might have been very similar about 4 billion years ago. \nYou’ll learn how exploration of Mars offers insight into the development of our own planet. That’s because Mars lacks Earth’s plate tectonics\, which have served to erase from our planet’s surface more than 1 billion years of history after Earth’s formation. It’s still possible to view Martian terrain that has existed since that planet formed\, making it a window for glimpsing our own planet’s distant past. \nProfessor Payré will discuss the forces that have left Mars totally dry and rusty while the Earth thrives with water and life. She’ll offer an overview of scientific debates over questions such as how Earth’s plate tectonics started and when life first blossomed here. Her talk will leave you with a deeper appreciation of what’s overhead and beneath your feet. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees and 12 percent state and local sales tax. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) \nImage: A selfie taken by the Curiosity rover in front of a rock outcrop on Mar. SUMMARY:MSF/Doctors Without Borders - Surgical Missions and Tales from the Field w/LUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Mine has been a life of frequent moves. I grew up as an “army brat”\, traveling across the US and Europe – graduating from high school in Frankfurt\, Germany in 1977. Medical School (Uniformed Services University\, 1986) and residency took place while spending 16 years in the Army. I considered myself a pretty savvy man of the world until the Army sent me to Haiti for 7 months. This deployment led to a profound awareness of lives lived outside our “first world” bubble – eventually spurring me to join in the missions and activities of Doctors Without Borders. \n  \nMichael J Mooney is a physician in the General Surgery Department at Kaiser Permanente in the Portland\, Southwest Washington area. Prior to serving 13 years with Kaiser Permanente in Atlanta\, he did his five-year surgical residency in Tacoma\, Washington at Fort Lewis. Having grown up as an “army brat” and then subsequently receiving medical and surgical training in the U.S. Army\, Dr. Mooney had the opportunity to live all over the world. Today\, he is a strong advocate for and regular volunteer with Doctors Without Borders\, greatly enjoying seven two-month surgical missions over 12 years providing direct trauma care in Haiti\, Sudan\, Sri Lanka\, and Nigeria.

SUMMARY:Willy Tea Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Willy Tea Taylor\nwith Jordan Smart\nLive @ Trumpet Blossom Cafe \n—-On-Sale Schedule—-\nMember Presale: Begins Wednesday\, February 7 @ 10:00 AM CT\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, February 9 @ 10:00 AM CT \nOnline ticket sales for this event will end 6 hours prior to the performance time. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door of the venue. \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$20.00 + Fees – General Admission\n$25.00 + Fees – General Admission (Day of Show) \n—-Show Description—-\nThere is no question that Willy Tea Taylor’s life as a singer/songwriter was predetermined – his role realized the moment he wrote his first song. His inspirations drawn from two separate wells; Living the life of a cattleman’s kid and experiencing true visionaries music like Greg Brown\, John Hartford\, and Guy Clark. The image of Guy Clark and friends sitting around the kitchen table loaded with ashtrays full of butts\, half-smoked cigarettes\, food\, and booze on one Christmas Eve in 1975 burned into Taylor’s soul. Those guys\, swapping songs without pretense\, lit Willy Tea’s fire. And ever since\, its led purpose with passion – finding a hang by curating relationships through musical friendships that get him closer to his own Clark style kitchen table. \nFrom his early days co-fronting The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit\, to singing solo in countless cowboy bars\, to pitching countless wiffle ball games\, Willy Tea has never lost the vision. Now Willy Tea Taylor has taken his vision of the “hero hang” on the road. and his talented traveling band The Fellership is made up of his fantastically talented buds who play Willy’s songs with a brand of reckless abandon and utter humility that spits in the face of pretense. The way The Fellership plays Will’s songs is the way they demand to be played and\, in their short time together\, they have been awe-ing every audience lucky enough to see them.

SUMMARY:Oumou Sangaré
DESCRIPTION:“The Songbird of Wassoulou” brings the music of Mali to The Englert’s stage. Oumou Sangaré is an icon whose powerful music and fierce feminism have inspired artist from Alicia Keys to Aya Nakamura to Beyoncé. The songs on her most recent record\, Timbuktu\, were largely written in Baltimore during the lockdowns of the COVID pandemic. The album blends the sounds of traditional West African instruments with those of instruments most associated with the blues. Sangaré will share music from this ambitious album as well as sounds from throughout her acclaimed career. How acclaimed? The New Yorker says\, “Percussive\, danceable\, and haunting\, the singer’s visionary mix is the primary reason that her voice has come to carry as much respect as Aretha Franklin’s.” \nPresented in collaboration with The Englert Theatre \nPart of Hancher’s 51st season \nLearn more at https://hancher.uiowa.edu/2023-24/oumou-sangare
