SUMMARY:Slaughter Beach\, Dog
DESCRIPTION:Englert Presents\nSlaughter Beach\, Dog\nLive @ The James Theater \n—-On-Sale Schedule—-\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, December 15 @ 10:00 AM CT\nArtist Presale: Thursday\, December 14 @ 10:00 AM CT \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$25.00 + Fees – General Admission (purchased in advance)\n$30.00 + Fees – General Admission (purchased day of show) \n—-Show Description—-\nFrom the Desk of Craig Finn \nHey\, \nI just got off the phone with Jake Ewald. He says hello. \nI called him to tell him I’ve been digging the new Slaughter Beach Dog album he’d sent me. I’d been playing it around the house a lot\, and had a question about it. He picked up on the first ring and told me that it’s called Crying Laughing Waving Smiling and that it’s going to come out on September 22nd on Lame-O Records. That wasn’t really my question\, but I guess it’s good to know. \nI actually called to ask him if his van really got stolen. He mentions it in one of my favorite songs on the record\, called “Engine”. I’ve been a fan of Slaughter Beach Dog for a little while now\, and I know that Jake can tell a fantastic story\, though I also know a great storyteller can stretch the truth. But Jake said his van really did get stolen in 2020\, right at the top of the pandemic. \nIt’s also true that just a little while later he moved from Philadelphia\, where he’d been living for a decade\, to a house in the Poconos. Once there\, he found he had less distraction and a calmer mind. He started going for walks and listening to music. He found some new appreciation for the “old guys”\, as he said on the phone- Neil Young\, Randy Newman\, Tom Waits\, those types. Personally\, I’d call them the “classic guys”\, but I’m a bit older so I’m probably somewhat defensive about age. \nAnyways\, to me it seems like some of this might have led to an old school approach to making a record. In July 2022\, the whole Slaughter Beach\, Dog band (Jake\, Zach\, Ian\, Adam\, Logan) gathered at their long time studio The Metal Shop back in Philly with a bunch of songs Jake had written over the past two years. Jake would show them a new song\, singing and playing an acoustic guitar\, and then the band would all play what they were hearing for the song. Classic\, human\, and not overthought. \ncf

SUMMARY:La Dame Blanche
DESCRIPTION:Yaite Ramos Rodriguez—who performs as La Dame Blanche—is the daughter of Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos\, trombonist with both the Buena Vista Social Club and Afro-Cuban All Stars. But that pedigree only scratches the surface of her approach to music and life. The singer\, flautist\, and percussionist blends the Cuban music of her childhood with the sounds of hip-hop\, dancehall\, and cumbia\, and plenty more. Her catchy beats are vehicles for female empowerment—and for summoning the spirits that will have you up and dancing. \nPart of Hancher’s 51st season \nLearn more at https://hancher.uiowa.edu/2023-24/la-dame-blanche

Since the release of her self-titled\, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album\, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion\, Vega’s distinctive\, “clear\, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool\, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post\, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital\, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career. \nBearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times)\, Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life\, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated\, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago. \nSuzanne Vega will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist\, Gerry Leonard\, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like Tom’s Diner\, Luka\, and more!

SUMMARY:Herein Lies the Truth
DESCRIPTION:Herein Lies the Truth\n\nApril 18 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm\n$15 – $39 \n\n\n\nRiverside Theater in Iowa City will produce “Herein Lies the Truth” by University of Iowa MFA nonfiction candidate Aaron Pang\, opening on April 18th and running through April 28th. \nHerein Lies the Truth is an autobiographical one-man show that tells the story of how an accident changed the trajectory of playwright and performer Aaron Pang’s life. Faced with a spinal cord injury\, this show follows Aaron’s journey to understand this new body in the uncertain world of first loves\, online dating\, and sex. Aaron explores how he navigates the perceptions of the world as someone who walks with a cane. When strangers gesture to it and ask him “what happened?”\, he is unsure of what to say. The show untangles his own understanding of his body and the stories he tells himself.  Part stand-up comedy and part storytelling\, Herein Lies the Truth is a sincere\, confused\, and imperfect story about life and love with a disability. \nWritten and performed by Aaron Pang and Directed by Johanna Kasimow. \nSponsored by Jo Ann Bell and The Robert E. Yager Charitable Trust  \n*Content warning: Herein Lies the Truth is appropriate for adults and older teenage audiences. Contains adult language\, mature subject matter\, and descriptions of sexual situations.

SUMMARY:Local Libraries LIT with Virginia Sole-Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our latest virtual Local Libraries {LIT} event featuring Virginia Sole-Smith. This is a free event\, with registration required. \nAs a journalist\, Virginia Sole-Smith has reported from kitchen tables and grocery stores\, graduated from beauty school\, and gone swimming in a mermaid’s tail. Virginia’s latest book\, Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture\, investigates how the “war on childhood obesity” has caused kids of all ages to absorb a daily onslaught of body shame from peers\, school\, diet culture\, and parents themselves — and offers research-based strategies to help parents name and navigate the anti-fat bias that infiltrates our schools\, doctor’s offices and family dinner tables. \nVirginia began her career in women’s magazines\, alternatively challenging beauty standards and gender norms\, and upholding diet culture through her health\, nutrition and fitness reporting. Motherhood inspired a reckoning of harm caused\, and led to her first book\, The Eating Instinct: Food Culture\, Body Image and Guilt in America\, in which Virginia explored how we can reconnect to our bodies\, and our own innate understanding of how to eat\, in a culture that’s constantly giving us so many mixed messages about both those things. \nVirginia is a frequent contributor to the New York Times. Her work also appears in the New York Times Magazine\, Scientific American\, and many other publications. She writes the newsletter Burnt Toast\, where she explores fatphobia\, diet culture\, parenting and health\, and also hosts the Burnt Toast Podcast. Virginia lives in New York’s Hudson Valley with her husband\, two daughters\, a cat\, a dog\, and way too many houseplants. \nClick the link below for registration information!\nhttp://tinyurl.com/LLL-Virgina-Sole-Smith \nThe goal of Local Libraries {Listen\, Initiate\, Talk} is to grow a thriving community which shines with diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. \nLocal Libraries LIT is a collaboration between and sponsored by:\n• Coralville Public Library\n• Iowa City Public Library\n• North Liberty Library\n• Oxford Public Library\n• Solon Public Library\n• Springmier (Tiffin) Public Library\n• Swisher Public Library\n• University of Iowa Libraries

SUMMARY:The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits\, Sexuality\, and Humanity in Modern India
DESCRIPTION:Join the South Asian Studies Program (SASP)\, an International Programs affinity group\, as they host Shailaja Paik from the University of Cincinnati. Paik will discuss her book The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits\, Sexuality\, and Humanity in Modern India which offers the first social and intellectual history of Dalit performance of Tamasha—a popular form of public\, secular\, traveling theater in Maharashtra—and places Dalit Tamasha women who represented the desire and disgust of the patriarchal society at the heart of modernization in twentieth-century India. \nPaik will engage with responses to her book by Arpita Sarker and Rajorshi Das. SASP Director Aniruddha Dutta will introduce Paik. \nDr. Shailaja Paik is the Charles P. Taft Distinguished Professor of History and associate faculty in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies and Asian Studies at the University of Cincinnati. Her first book Dalit Women’s Education in Modern India: Double Discrimination (Routledge\, 2014) examines the nexus between caste\, class\, gender\, and state pedagogical practices among Dalit (“Untouchable”) women in urban India. Her second book The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits\, Sexuality\, and Humanity in Modern India (Stanford University Press\, 2022) focuses on the politics of caste\, class\, gender\, sexuality\, and popular culture in modern Maharashtra. Her book won the John F. Richards and the Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy prizes for the most distinguished work on South Asia. She is currently working on her monograph “Becoming ‘Vulgar’: Caste Domination and Normative Sexuality in Modern India” and co-editing three books: Dalits: A Reader; Dr. B.R. SUMMARY:Indigo Girls
DESCRIPTION:Indigo Girls\nwith Lucy Wainwright Roche \nSponsored by: The Marcus-Fitzpatrick Team of Blank & McCune \n—-Ticket Options—-\n$89.00 + Fees – Reserved Seating – Premium\n$69.00 + Fees – Reserved Seating\n$59.00 + Fees – General Admission – Friend/Member \n—-Show Description—-\nReleased in 1989\, Indigo Girls’ eponymous major label debut sold over two million copies under the power of singles “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears” and turned Indigo Girls into one of the most successful folk duos in history. Over a thirty-five-year career that began in clubs around their native Atlanta\, Georgia\, the multi-Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray has recorded sixteen studio albums\, sold over 15 million records\, and built a dedicated\, enduring following across the globe. Rolling Stone describes them as the “ideal duet partners.” Committed and uncompromising activists\, they work on issues like immigration reform (El Refugio)\, LGBTQ advocacy\, education (Imagination Library)\, death penalty reform\, and Native American rights. They are co-founders of Honor the Earth\, a non-profit dedicated to the survival of sustainable Native communities\, Indigenous environmental justice\, and green energy solutions. \nTheir latest record\, Look Long is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date. “We joke about being old\, but what is old when it comes to music? We’re still a bar band at heart\,” says Saliers. “While our lyrics and writing approach may change\, our passion for music feels the same as it did when we were 25-years-old.” “As time has gone on\, our audience has become more expansive and diverse\, giving me a sense of joy\,” she adds. To hear those collective voices raise into one\, singing along and overpowering the band itself\, one realizes the importance Indigo Girls’ music has in this moment. In our often-terrifying present\, we are all in search of a daily refuge\, a stolen hour or two\, to engage with something that brings us joy\, perspective\, or maybe just calm. As one bar band once put it\, “We go to the doctor\, we go to the mountains…we go to the Bible\, we go through the work out.” For millions\, they go to the Indigo Girls. On Look Long they’ll find a creative partnership certain of its bearings\, forging a way forward.

SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Iowa City: Exploring Mars\, Understanding Earth
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Iowa City presents: “Exploring Mars\, Understanding Earth\,” a look at missions to the Red Planet and how they’re shedding light on our own’s past\, with Valerie Payré\, assistant professor in the University of Iowa’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and former member of the team driving the Curiosity rover on Mars’s surface. \nWhile most of us merely look up at Mars\, Professor Valerie Payré takes in a much closer view. An expert on Mars geology\, she had a hand in driving Curiosity around that planet’s surface and analyzes data received by Martian rovers and spacecrafts. \nYou don’t need to travel any further than the Graduate Iowa City hotel to join Dr. Payré for a fascinating discussion of what we’re learning from such work. \nShe’ll present the up-to-date data from spacecrafts orbiting around Mars and from Mars rovers\, discussing traces of liquid water that existed far in the past and the current existence on Mars of polar ice and diverse volcanic activity. She’ll discuss whether life could exist on Mars and talk about how Mars and Earth might have been very similar about 4 billion years ago. \nYou’ll learn how exploration of Mars offers insight into the development of our own planet. That’s because Mars lacks Earth’s plate tectonics\, which have served to erase from our planet’s surface more than 1 billion years of history after Earth’s formation. It’s still possible to view Martian terrain that has existed since that planet formed\, making it a window for glimpsing our own planet’s distant past. \nProfessor Payré will discuss the forces that have left Mars totally dry and rusty while the Earth thrives with water and life. She’ll offer an overview of scientific debates over questions such as how Earth’s plate tectonics started and when life first blossomed here. Her talk will leave you with a deeper appreciation of what’s overhead and beneath your feet. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus processing fees and 12 percent state and local sales tax. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) \nImage: A selfie taken by the Curiosity rover in front of a rock outcrop on Mar. SUMMARY:MSF/Doctors Without Borders - Surgical Missions and Tales from the Field w/LUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Mine has been a life of frequent moves. I grew up as an “army brat”\, traveling across the US and Europe – graduating from high school in Frankfurt\, Germany in 1977. Medical School (Uniformed Services University\, 1986) and residency took place while spending 16 years in the Army. I considered myself a pretty savvy man of the world until the Army sent me to Haiti for 7 months. This deployment led to a profound awareness of lives lived outside our “first world” bubble – eventually spurring me to join in the missions and activities of Doctors Without Borders. \n  \nMichael J Mooney is a physician in the General Surgery Department at Kaiser Permanente in the Portland\, Southwest Washington area. Prior to serving 13 years with Kaiser Permanente in Atlanta\, he did his five-year surgical residency in Tacoma\, Washington at Fort Lewis. Having grown up as an “army brat” and then subsequently receiving medical and surgical training in the U.S. Army\, Dr. Mooney had the opportunity to live all over the world. Today\, he is a strong advocate for and regular volunteer with Doctors Without Borders\, greatly enjoying seven two-month surgical missions over 12 years providing direct trauma care in Haiti\, Sudan\, Sri Lanka\, and Nigeria.
