SUMMARY:Herein Lies the Truth
DESCRIPTION:Herein Lies the Truth\n\nApril 18 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm\n$15 – $39 \n\n\n\nRiverside Theater in Iowa City will produce “Herein Lies the Truth” by University of Iowa MFA nonfiction candidate Aaron Pang\, opening on April 18th and running through April 28th. \nHerein Lies the Truth is an autobiographical one-man show that tells the story of how an accident changed the trajectory of playwright and performer Aaron Pang’s life. Faced with a spinal cord injury\, this show follows Aaron’s journey to understand this new body in the uncertain world of first loves\, online dating\, and sex. Aaron explores how he navigates the perceptions of the world as someone who walks with a cane. When strangers gesture to it and ask him “what happened?”\, he is unsure of what to say. The show untangles his own understanding of his body and the stories he tells himself.  Part stand-up comedy and part storytelling\, Herein Lies the Truth is a sincere\, confused\, and imperfect story about life and love with a disability. \nWritten and performed by Aaron Pang and Directed by Johanna Kasimow. \nSponsored by Jo Ann Bell and The Robert E. Yager Charitable Trust  \n*Content warning: Herein Lies the Truth is appropriate for adults and older teenage audiences. Contains adult language\, mature subject matter\, and descriptions of sexual situations.

SUMMARY:What was Zainichi Literature? Intersectionality and the Ethics of Illegibility
DESCRIPTION:Join the Korean Studies Research Network\, an International Programs affinity group\, for a webinar titled “What was Zainichi Literature? Intersectionality and the Ethics of Illegibility.” This virtual event \, presented by Dr. Cindi Textor\, assistant professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah. \nRegister here \nThis talk will present an encounter between the critical discourse on intersectionality and texts by Korean subjects of the Japanese empire and their postwar descendants in Japan. Arguing for intersectionality as a reading method rather than strictly a tool of social analysis\, this talk explores the productive potential of incoherence in literature by Koreans in Japan (Zainichi literature)\, particularly at a moment when anxieties about the “end” of the genre are on the rise. \nDr. Cindi Textor’s work on incoherence\, illegibility\, and intersectionality in Korean and Japanese language fiction has appeared in positions: Asia Critique\, Journal of Korean Studies\, and other venues. Her monograph\, Intersectional Incoherence: Zainichi Literature and the Ethics of Illegibility\, is forthcoming from the University of California Press. She is also the translator of Kim Sŏkpŏm’s The Curious Tale of Mandogi’s Ghost (Columbia University Press\, 2010) and Lee Yangji’s Yuhi (in Nabi Taryŏng and Other Stories\, Seoul Selection\, 2022). \nThe Korean Studies Research Network aims to bring together scholars whose research focuses on Korea-related topics and to provide mentoring to the younger generation of scholars. It serves as a platform to facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scholars and graduate students at the University of Iowa and institutions of higher education in the Midwest through seminars\, speaker series\, and workshops. \nThis event is made possible through generous support from the Korea Foundation. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance at 319-467-1619 or daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu.

He says hello. \nI called him to tell him I’ve been digging the new Slaughter Beach Dog album he’d sent me. I’d been playing it around the house a lot\, and had a question about it. He picked up on the first ring and told me that it’s called Crying Laughing Waving Smiling and that it’s going to come out on September 22nd on Lame-O Records. That wasn’t really my question\, but I guess it’s good to know. \nI actually called to ask him if his van really got stolen. He mentions it in one of my favorite songs on the record\, called “Engine”. I’ve been a fan of Slaughter Beach Dog for a little while now\, and I know that Jake can tell a fantastic story\, though I also know a great storyteller can stretch the truth. But Jake said his van really did get stolen in 2020\, right at the top of the pandemic. \nIt’s also true that just a little while later he moved from Philadelphia\, where he’d been living for a decade\, to a house in the Poconos. Once there\, he found he had less distraction and a calmer mind. He started going for walks and listening to music. He found some new appreciation for the “old guys”\, as he said on the phone- Neil Young\, Randy Newman\, Tom Waits\, those types. Personally\, I’d call them the “classic guys”\, but I’m a bit older so I’m probably somewhat defensive about age. \nAnyways\, to me it seems like some of this might have led to an old school approach to making a record. In July 2022\, the whole Slaughter Beach\, Dog band (Jake\, Zach\, Ian\, Adam\, Logan) gathered at their long time studio The Metal Shop back in Philly with a bunch of songs Jake had written over the past two years. Jake would show them a new song\, singing and playing an acoustic guitar\, and then the band would all play what they were hearing for the song. Classic\, human\, and not overthought. \ncf

SUMMARY:La Dame Blanche
DESCRIPTION:Yaite Ramos Rodriguez—who performs as La Dame Blanche—is the daughter of Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos\, trombonist with both the Buena Vista Social Club and Afro-Cuban All Stars. But that pedigree only scratches the surface of her approach to music and life. The singer\, flautist\, and percussionist blends the Cuban music of her childhood with the sounds of hip-hop\, dancehall\, and cumbia\, and plenty more. Her catchy beats are vehicles for female empowerment—and for summoning the spirits that will have you up and dancing. \nPart of Hancher’s 51st season \nLearn more at https://hancher.uiowa.edu/2023-24/la-dame-blanche

Since the release of her self-titled\, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album\, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion\, Vega’s distinctive\, “clear\, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool\, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post\, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital\, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career. \nBearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times)\, Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life\, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated\, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago. \nSuzanne Vega will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist\, Gerry Leonard\, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like Tom’s Diner\, Luka\, and more!

SUMMARY:Local Libraries LIT with Virginia Sole-Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our latest virtual Local Libraries {LIT} event featuring Virginia Sole-Smith. This is a free event\, with registration required. \nAs a journalist\, Virginia Sole-Smith has reported from kitchen tables and grocery stores\, graduated from beauty school\, and gone swimming in a mermaid’s tail. Virginia’s latest book\, Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture\, investigates how the “war on childhood obesity” has caused kids of all ages to absorb a daily onslaught of body shame from peers\, school\, diet culture\, and parents themselves — and offers research-based strategies to help parents name and navigate the anti-fat bias that infiltrates our schools\, doctor’s offices and family dinner tables. \nVirginia began her career in women’s magazines\, alternatively challenging beauty standards and gender norms\, and upholding diet culture through her health\, nutrition and fitness reporting. Motherhood inspired a reckoning of harm caused\, and led to her first book\, The Eating Instinct: Food Culture\, Body Image and Guilt in America\, in which Virginia explored how we can reconnect to our bodies\, and our own innate understanding of how to eat\, in a culture that’s constantly giving us so many mixed messages about both those things. \nVirginia is a frequent contributor to the New York Times. Her work also appears in the New York Times Magazine\, Scientific American\, and many other publications. She writes the newsletter Burnt Toast\, where she explores fatphobia\, diet culture\, parenting and health\, and also hosts the Burnt Toast Podcast. Virginia lives in New York’s Hudson Valley with her husband\, two daughters\, a cat\, a dog\, and way too many houseplants. \nClick the link below for registration information!\nhttp://tinyurl.com/LLL-Virgina-Sole-Smith \nThe goal of Local Libraries {Listen\, Initiate\, Talk} is to grow a thriving community which shines with diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. \nLocal Libraries LIT is a collaboration between and sponsored by:\n• Coralville Public Library\n• Iowa City Public Library\n• North Liberty Library\n• Oxford Public Library\n• Solon Public Library\n• Springmier (Tiffin) Public Library\n• Swisher Public Library\n• University of Iowa Libraries
