SUMMARY:Spring Opera: Fierce by William Menefield
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\nAdults $20\nYouth & Non-UI Students $10\nUI Students $5 \nMusic by William Menefield\nLibretto by Sheila Williams\nDirected by William Menefield \nCo-Produced by the University of Iowa School of Music\, Performing Arts Production Unit\, and Hancher Auditorium. \nFierce marks a major moment in our Hancher season. This new opera—making its Iowa premiere—reflects the collaborative spirit of Performing Arts at Iowa and will be co-produced by the School of Music\, the Performing Arts Production Unit\, and Hancher Auditorium. \nThe Cincinnati Opera commissioned composer\, musician\, and UI Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies William Menefield to write the music for an opera in collaboration with librettist Sheila Williams. The resulting work\, Fierce\, debuted at the Cincinnati Opera in July 2022 to packed houses and enthusiastic audiences. An opera for the 21st century\, Fierce follows four teenage girls finding identity and purpose in the world as they write their college essays in a high school writers’ workshop. The young women face striking internal challenges—the difficulties of high school popularity and social media\, the weight of parental expectations\, personal loss\, and unstable lives at home—but come together to find community\, self-empowerment\, and the confidence to embrace new chapters. \nIn a production led by Professor Menefield\, Fierce will feature an ensemble of University of Iowa singers\, musicians\, and dancers with production support from the Performing Arts Production Unit and Hancher Auditorium. The Fierce creative team will engage our campus and community with several outreach events in the lead-up to the Iowa debut of this timely\, remarkable work.

SUMMARY:Madeleine Peyroux
DESCRIPTION:2023 finds the prolific musician continuing her world tour around the 2021 release of Careless Love Deluxe Anniversary Edition. As part of Rounder’s 50th Anniversary celebrations\, the label is offering a re-release Deluxe Edition of the 2004 album with additional live performance material to be released worldwide on 21 August 2021.\n\nPeyroux’ Careless Love Forever World Tour\, begun in September of 2021 continues into 2023 with several more performances in the US\, Europe\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and South America. Madeleine is debuting her new symphony program with performances beginning in April in the US and extending through the summer into fall of 2023 with several more to be added to her 2024 touring season.\n\nAs a teen performing on the streets of Paris\, Peyroux exemplified attributes akin to legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. This garnered the attention of Atlantic Records\, which lead to her breakthrough debut album in 1996– Dreamland\, which sold around 200\,000 copies.\n\n\nPeyroux recently announced the upcoming release of her highly anticipated 9th studio album\, Let’s Walk\, which will be out on June 28th via Thirty Tigers. Let’s Walk is her most diverse\, intimate and bold work as she shares thoughtful and revealing views on personal and societal concerns. She incorporates elements of jazz\, folk\, gospel blues\, Americana\, chamber pop\, Latin rhythms\, and a little playful humor into the mix. \n  \nLet’s Walk is Peyroux’s first record in which she co-wrote every song with longtime collaborator Jon Herington. As evidenced from her new single “Please Come On Inside\,” Peyroux has empathy and wisdom to impart.

SUMMARY:What was Zainichi Literature? Intersectionality and the Ethics of Illegibility
DESCRIPTION:Join the Korean Studies Research Network\, an International Programs affinity group\, for a webinar titled “What was Zainichi Literature? Intersectionality and the Ethics of Illegibility.” This virtual event \, presented by Dr. Cindi Textor\, assistant professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah. \nRegister here \nThis talk will present an encounter between the critical discourse on intersectionality and texts by Korean subjects of the Japanese empire and their postwar descendants in Japan. Arguing for intersectionality as a reading method rather than strictly a tool of social analysis\, this talk explores the productive potential of incoherence in literature by Koreans in Japan (Zainichi literature)\, particularly at a moment when anxieties about the “end” of the genre are on the rise. \nDr. Cindi Textor’s work on incoherence\, illegibility\, and intersectionality in Korean and Japanese language fiction has appeared in positions: Asia Critique\, Journal of Korean Studies\, and other venues. Her monograph\, Intersectional Incoherence: Zainichi Literature and the Ethics of Illegibility\, is forthcoming from the University of California Press. She is also the translator of Kim Sŏkpŏm’s The Curious Tale of Mandogi’s Ghost (Columbia University Press\, 2010) and Lee Yangji’s Yuhi (in Nabi Taryŏng and Other Stories\, Seoul Selection\, 2022). \nThe Korean Studies Research Network aims to bring together scholars whose research focuses on Korea-related topics and to provide mentoring to the younger generation of scholars. It serves as a platform to facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research among scholars and graduate students at the University of Iowa and institutions of higher education in the Midwest through seminars\, speaker series\, and workshops. \nThis event is made possible through generous support from the Korea Foundation. \nIndividuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program\, please contact Daniel Vorwerk in advance at 319-467-1619 or daniel-vorwerk@uiowa.edu.

SUMMARY:Herein Lies the Truth
DESCRIPTION:Herein Lies the Truth\n\nApril 18 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm\n$15 – $39 \n\n\n\nRiverside Theater in Iowa City will produce “Herein Lies the Truth” by University of Iowa MFA nonfiction candidate Aaron Pang\, opening on April 18th and running through April 28th. \nHerein Lies the Truth is an autobiographical one-man show that tells the story of how an accident changed the trajectory of playwright and performer Aaron Pang’s life. Faced with a spinal cord injury\, this show follows Aaron’s journey to understand this new body in the uncertain world of first loves\, online dating\, and sex. Aaron explores how he navigates the perceptions of the world as someone who walks with a cane. When strangers gesture to it and ask him “what happened?”\, he is unsure of what to say. The show untangles his own understanding of his body and the stories he tells himself.  Part stand-up comedy and part storytelling\, Herein Lies the Truth is a sincere\, confused\, and imperfect story about life and love with a disability. \nWritten and performed by Aaron Pang and Directed by Johanna Kasimow. \nSponsored by Jo Ann Bell and The Robert E. Yager Charitable Trust  \n*Content warning: Herein Lies the Truth is appropriate for adults and older teenage audiences. Contains adult language\, mature subject matter\, and descriptions of sexual situations.
