SUMMARY:South Side Leisure Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:Join the rides! All ages and skill levels are welcome on our 3rd Thursday of the month\, 5th Annual South Side Leisure Bike Rides May through September 6pm-7:30pm. \nRides start at the Broadway Neighborhood Center and explore the beautiful south side of town and maybe even beyond! \nPlus\, thanks to our partners\, all riders will also get a free home-made\, all natural popsicle from our south side ice cream shop inside Acapulco Mexican Bakery in the South of 6 Iowa City Business District (while supplies last). \nAll ages are welcome\, children must be accompanied by a guardian. \n______________________________ \nThis bike ride series started 5 years ago with long-time bicycle advocate\, South District resident and community builder\, Bob Oppliger–he was passionate about so many things including empowering youth and families to feel confident riding their bicycles in the community where they live\, work and play. Bob organized so many bike rides and educational bike rodeos for decades while also advocating for bicycling at the national level too! We celebrate Bob’s memory on these rides and as we come together as community to build relationships and to enjoy the beauty on this side of town. \nAll ages are welcome\, children must be accompanied by a guardian. \nWe are also looking for Bike Leads and Sweep positions that help maintain a fun\, safe ride for all. Please use link below to learn more and to sign up. This volunteering is a great way for high school youth to earn silver cord hours and for adults to give back and model being part of a team effort that uplifts an entire community WHILE having fun! \nVOLUNTEER SIGN UP: https://shorturl.at/bC046 \nBig shout out to our partners: Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County\, South District Neighborhood Association\, South of 6 Iowa City Business District\, United Action for Youth\, Bicyclists of Iowa City and Acapulco Mexican Bakery.

SUMMARY:PWYC The Monk and the Gun Film Screening w/POPCORN
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FILMSCENE AND IOWA CITY WELCOMING WEEK\nThe Monk and the Gun is a Bhutanese film set in 2006 during the country’s transition from a constitutional monarchy to a democracy. The film explores this period through intertwined narratives: a young monk tasked with finding a gun for his lama\, an American searching for a historic firearm\, and villagers navigating their first democratic election. \nThese stories unfold against Bhutan’s stunning landscapes and a society encountering modernity and Western culture for the first time while offering a satirical and thought-provoking commentary on democracy\, modernization\, and cultural change. It highlights the challenges and paradoxes faced by a traditionally isolated society opening up to global influences\, including the introduction of democratic processes and the clash of cultural values. \nIn the context of global democracy and the upcoming U.S. elections\, The Monk and the Gun provides a nuanced reflection on the value of democratic participation and the influence of external cultural forces. It invites viewers to consider the complexities and consequences of political and cultural transitions\, making it a relevant and engaging piece for discussions on the state of democracy worldwide and the factors that shape electoral processes and outcomes.

SUMMARY:A Night on the Town- Orchestra Iowa Masterworks I
DESCRIPTION:The season opens on a high note with two inspired takes on Gershwin. Stewart Goodyear plays the classic Rhapsody in Blue\, followed by jazzy variations on I’ve Got Rhythm performed by the Menefield/Phillips Quartet. Symphony No. 1 by Black composer William Grant Still blends classical symphonic form with spirituals\, blues\, and jazz. SUMMARY:Scalia/Ginsburg: An Operatic Comedy by Derrick Wang
DESCRIPTION:Scalia/Ginsburg is an operatic comedy by composer-librettist Derrick Wang\, hailed as “a dream come true” by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It tells the story of the friendship between the notorious RBG and her fierce judicial opponent Antonin Scalia through the lens of their shared love of opera. What better way to tell of this unlikely bond across political lines than through the art form they both adored? \nScalia/Ginsburg is sponsored by Matt Novak and Joanne Lilledahl.  \nThe University of Iowa Law School is sponsoring a “Law School Night at the Theatre” on Friday\, September 13th.

SUMMARY:Prompt for the Planet: Community Promises
DESCRIPTION:This free community event will immerse attendees in a vibrant array of performances as local artists share their unique responses to Prompt for the Planet\, transforming the theater into a space where art meets action\, and creativity becomes a catalyst for change. \nThe Prompt was originally conceived in 2018 when University of Iowa student\, Shannon Nolan and her instructor David Gould asked U.S. Youth Poet Laureate\, Amanda Gorman\, to create a prompt for the rising generations to reflect on the state of the planet. Gorman’s challenge was simple yet profound: “Think of one element and speak in its voice through pictures and words.” This year\, the project returns with an extraordinary showcase of music\, poetry\, dance\, and visual art\, all responding to The Prompt in a way that highlights the power of art to drive change. \nThis year’s event features an exciting lineup of performers\, including: \nSara Routh | Bella Moss | Emily Pritchard & The LENA Earth Warriors Children’s Choir | Sophia McLaughlin | Snack Break Movement Arts: Joshua & Emily Culbreath | Chuy Renteria | The Quire | Daniel Fine\, Dana Keeton\, Fannie Hungerford\, Katie Robbins | Elizabeth Rodriquez Fielder | Nick Goergen | Noah Goupell \nThe event is presented by The LENA Project\, UI Office of Sustainability and the Environment\, ENGIE\, and The Englert Theater.
