SUMMARY:Dolly Parton\, Faith\, and American Culture: Remembering an Unlikely Angel
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate “9 to 5 Eve” with an evening exploring the faith\, music\, and remarkable cultural legacy of Dolly Parton. \nThe University of Iowa Department of Classics and Religious Studies welcomes Sarah Dees\, a scholar of American religion who is currently writing a spiritual biography of Dolly Parton\, for a public conversation about Dolly’s place in American Christianity and culture. \nWhy did Dolly become more than a musical icon for so many people? What role did faith play in her life\, music\, and public identity? And what can her enduring appeal teach us about religion\, celebrity\, morality\, philanthropy\, and American culture? \nDees will offer a short presentation drawing on her research\, followed by a conversation and audience Q&A. \nThen stay for the Dollybration! Following the program\, we’ll celebrate Dolly’s life and legacy with music\, refreshments\, and opportunities to participate and give back\, including a special focus on Dolly’s commitment to childhood literacy. \nThursday\, September 24 at 6:00 p.m.\nOld Brick\, Iowa City \nThe event is free and open to the public. Dolly fans\, Dolly newcomers\, and the Dolly-curious are all welcome.

The year is 1608: London is under the shadow of plague\, its ruler is erratic\, and the arts are in peril. (Sound familiar?) Shakespeare’s latest tragedies are no longer drawing audiences; his acting company wants a crowd-pleaser; the King needs a Psalm; and the playwright himself is questioning whether his greatest work is behind him. When an unlikely encounter sends him into the colorful world of star-crossed lovers\, brash rogues\, and enterprising brothel keepers\, Shakespeare discovers the inspiration that propels him to his last great plays. \nWritten by Emmy-winning producer and playwright Scott Carter\, whose previous play The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson\, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: Discord was produced by Riverside in 2019. I\, Will: A Late Romance is generously sponsored by Denice and Michael Connell. \nI\, Will: A Late Romance is produced at Riverside Theatre as part of a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere. Other Partner Theaters are Stage West Theatre (Fort Worth\, Texas) and The Invisible Theatre (Tucson\, Arizona). For more information\, please visit nnpn.org
