SUMMARY:Democracy Noir: A Chilling Expose of Far-Right Authoritarianism in Hungary... and America
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FILMSCENE \nAcademy Award nominated and Emmy winning director Connie Field is a pioneering social documentary filmmaker. Before getting involved in film she worked as an organizer in many social and human rights organizations where she established her commitment to progressive social change which she has carried into her film career. Many of her films focus on hidden histories\, stories that had not been told before which should be an important part of our collective memories. Her work has been broadcast in over 30 countries including Japan\, Brazil\, South Africa\, Britain\, Australia\, Denmark\, Germany\, France\, Spain\, England\, and in the US. She is a recipient of the John Grierson Award as most outstanding social documentarian\, and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. \nDemocracy Noir provides a sweeping account of one of the most consequential regimes of this century. It paints an incisive portrait of how Viktor Orbán used a free and democratic election to install authoritarian rule in Hungary\, enjoying widespread approval from Hungarian nationalists as well as global conservatives inclined to his illiberal views. He changed the constitution\, took over the courts\, dismantled the rule of law\, and took over the media. Revered by Donald Trump and the Heritage Foundation\, Orban’s influence helped shape Project 2025 and the current policies of the Republican Party. The film is a timely lesson on how the rise of autocratic politicians around the world\, and an increasingly emboldened far right politic\, pose dire consequences for us all. \nDemocracy Noir: A Chilling Expose of Far-Right Authoritarianism in Hungary… and America \nSUNDAY\, MARCH 8\, 2026\n12 PM – 2:30 PM\nFILMSCENE AT THE CHAUNCEY \nHosted by ICFRC Executive Director Peter Gerlach

In 2025\, Dinnebier became the eighth player in Drake program history to take home the Jackie Stiles Player of the Year award. It was just the sixth time that an individual had won the award in back-to-back years. The two-time Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year finalist finished her career as Drake’s seventh-leading scorer in program history with 2\,088 points\, second-most assists (780) and third-most steals (272). \nAn Academic All-American in 2025\, Dinnebier is currently in her third year of the pharmacy (PharmD) program at Drake and is expected to graduate in 2027. \nJacqui Kalin – Northern Iowa Women’s Basketball Player\, 2007-13\nOne of Northern Iowa’s most decorated women’s basketball players of all-time\, Jacqui Kalin left her legacy in many areas of the game. Kalin put together one of the most accomplished careers\, developing from MVC Freshman of the Year into one of the most decorated student-athletes in league history. In 2013\, she became the first player in MVC history to twice earn both Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. She closed her career as UNI’s all-time leader in scoring (2\,081)\, three-pointers made (265)\, made free throws (484)\, free throw percentage (92%)\, assists (491)\, games played and started (136) and minutes played (4\,352)\, while ranking sixth in MVC history in scoring and becoming just the third player in UNI men’s and women’s basketball history to surpass 2\,000 career points. Kalin was inducted into the UNI Hall of Fame in 2017 and is the first female student-athlete to have her jersey retired at Northern Iowa.
