A wild ride and a hopeful example for anyone who has wondered what it’s like to spend your life working toward a better world.” \nCindy Cohn is Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. From 2000 to 2015\, she served as EFF’s Legal Director as well as its General Counsel. Today\, she spearheads a team of more than 120 lawyers\, activists\, and technologists who are dedicated to ensuring that technology supports speech\, privacy\, and innovation for all the people of the world. \nRishab Nithyanand is the F. DESCRIPTION:Loudon Wainwright III and Chris Smither.  \nIn concert.  \n\nHere’s a rare chance to see two venerable musicians.\nIt was the late 1960’s on Charles Street in Boston\, outside one of the legendary clubs during the folk revival era\, these two new-to-the-scene young musicians first met. They’ve stayed friends ever since with their paths crossing at folk festivals and concert halls and folk clubs. Over the years\, the two have guest-appeared on each other’s record\, Chris sang on “Somebody Else” for Loudon’s Older Than My Old Man Now record. Then Loudon lent a hand on Chris’ 50-year career retrospective recording Still on the Levee (singing on “What They Say”). Throughout the decades\, they each have made their own individual and indelible mark on the contemporary singer-songwriter scene with Wainwright\, known for his “Dead Skunk” song and Smither\, known for “Love You Like A Man”. They have both recorded numerous albums and continue to tour as journeymen. Acting is also a common thread they share with Wainwright having been in many plays\, TV shows\, and movies including the hit TV show M.A.S.H and on Broadway Pump Boys and Dinettes. Smither recently made his acting debut in the short film The Singers. Their most recent recordings are Wainwright’s Live In London (2025) and Smither’s All About the Bones (2024).

DESCRIPTION:PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE IOWA CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY AND UI SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION\n​\n​Journalism remains essential to holding power accountable and repelling autocratic trends. At a time of global democratic erosion\, journalism confronts multiple challenges — economic precarity\, political pressures\, lack of trust\, precarious work conditions\, and a dwindling ability to command public attention amid (dis)information abundance. But democracies do not have an alternative institution to do what journalism does on any given day\, despite its shortcomings and limitations. The fact that autocrats fear and persecute journalism is a telling sign that journalism is still relevant to scrutinize power\, bring public awareness to important matters\, and spark actions by other democratic institutions. In this talk\, Prof. Waisbord will interrogate the global role of journalism as authoritarianism and populism gain ground and civil society faces escalating crises. \nSilvio Waisbord is a Professor at the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. He is President and Fellow of the International Communication Association. He is Editor of the International Journal of Communication. He is the author and editor of twenty books\, as well as articles on journalism and politics\, communication studies\, media policy\, and communication for social change. His most recent book is Introduction to Journalism: Thinking Globally (Polity). He served as Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University (2020-2023). Also\, he is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Communication and the International Journal of Press/Politics. Gilbert St. \n2026 marks 10 years of ICE CREAM\, and to celebrate we have a whole weekend of FREE events celebrating comics\, zines\, and DIY media! \nJoin us Friday April 3 for a line-up of pre-party events including:\n4-5pm: Reading by Sam Szabo\, author of Enlightened Transsexual Comix\, Momix\, Girl Hell\, and more\n5:30-6:30pm: Comics Karaoke featuring Jackson Palmer and Rv. Xen\, with live music by Antifahorn\n7-10pm: Screening of John Porcellino’s documentary “Root Hog or Die” in the Media Arts Co-op \nThen\, Saturday April 4 is the fest! Start a new project or bring in one you are working on\, whatever it is sketching\, knitting\, embroidery\, origami\, or more!\nThe event is free and open to all. Musicians will present work spanning psych\, jazz\, creative music\, contemporary classical\, avant-garde performance\, alternative folk\, ambient\, noise\, and electronic sound.
