DESCRIPTION:This is our biggest fundraiser for the American Legion Post 1976 – proudly serving Raw Oysters\, Grilled Oysters\, Low Country Boil\, Bouillabaisse\, and Gumbo. This year our grilled oysters are back. As always\, a selection of 18 Stouts and Sours for your enjoyment. Beer list coming soon with the possibility of more beers to be added. Both VIP and General Admission tickets are available.\nA portion of the proceeds\, and any additional donations benefit the American Legion Post 1976 in an effort to support our community partners in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids Corridor.\nOUTDOOR EVENT: This is primarily an outdoor event – PLEASE DRESS ACCORDINGLY FOR THE WEATHER. There will be outdoor bathrooms only. We have very limited reserved indoor seating available but a large supply of outdoor seating.\nTICKET LIMITS: There is a limit of 12 total event tickets per transaction; a maximum of 6 VIP tickets and 6 General Admission tickets. There is also a maximum of 1 indoor table bundle and 1 outdoor table reservation. VIP tickets purchased with an indoor table bundle will count towards the 6 ticket VIP limit. DESCRIPTION:Genre Fiction Writing: Dragons\, Aliens\, Ghosts-So What? \nEvery Wednesday in March starting:\nMar 05\, 2025\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM \nIowa City\, 1019 E Washington St\, Iowa City\, IA 52240\, USA\nAbout the event \nDo you have an idea for a sweeping fantasy but don’t know where to start? Or an idea for a tense\, spine tingling horror but don’t know how to create that suspense on the page? In this class\, we’ll approach genre writing by starting with the most important element: a compelling protagonist. Too often\, the intricate magic system or impressive scary monster is where all our writing efforts go\, but a story is only interesting if the reader is invested in who it is happening to. Questions we’ll consider: Why is your protagonist the right lead for this story? What does your protagonist have to lose? What does the antagonist make the protagonist face about themselves? Generative writing prompts will be used to help us figure out who our characters are\, what they want\, and why it matters if they succeed (or fail!) We will then develop our fantastical/sci-fi/horror worlds around our protagonist and their internal struggles. By the end of this course\, you will have a general structure for your genre novel\, an outline for your protagonist’s character arc\, and several workshopped scenes. No experience necessary! Many of these items are specific projects of the farm and kitchen\, so the flavors and experience are unique to each dinner. Seating is limited. One welcome beverage is included with the price of the dinner. Now set to release a new album this fall on Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records\, Pieta will offer new and currently un-released songs along with fan favorites for her show at The James. Her much loved album Paradise Outlaw was also just re-issued digitally on Righteous Babe (December 2024) with a limited edition vinyl which will be available at the show – and Pieta plans to “weave a lot of Paradise Outlaw songs in to the set\, too.” While she regularly tours nationally and internationally\, it has been a long while since Pieta Brown has played Iowa City\, and as she put it\, “expect lots of songs — and maybe some special guests!”
