There will be discussion of and depiction of sexual assault and rape\, murder including hanging\, simulated consensual sex\, physical and mental abuse and manipulation\, enslavement\, and childbirth. \nNot recommended for those under 18.\n\nSynopsis:\nAs portrayed in Homer’s Odyssey\, Penelope – wife of Odysseus and cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy – has become a symbol of wifely duty and devotion\, enduring twenty years of waiting when her husband goes to fight in the Trojan War. As she fends off the attentions of a hundred greedy suitors\, travelling minstrels regale her with news of Odysseus’ epic adventures around the Mediterranean – slaying monsters and grappling with amorous goddesses. When Odysseus finally comes home\, he kills her suitors and then\, in an act that served as little more than a footnote in Homer’s original story\, inexplicably hangs Penelope’s twelve maids. \nNow\, Penelope and her chorus of wronged maids tell their side of the story in a new stage version by Margaret Atwood\, adapted from her own wry\, witty and wise novel. \nThe Penelopiad tells the story of Penelope\, wife of the famous Odysseus. Penelope\, along with her twelve maids\, share their side of the story\, in a play that examines gender and class in true Atwood fashion.

But their plans clash with their next-door neighbors\, Frank and Virginia\, a well-established couple with a prize-worthy garden of their own. What begins as a simple property line disagreement soon blossoms into a full-scale border dispute! Amid conflicting assumptions about community\, identity\, and the American dream\, is peaceful coexistence possible? \nKaren Zacarías\, one of the most produced modern playwrights in the U.S.\, is known for her witty and incisive explorations of contemporary issues. When Odysseus finally comes home\, he kills her suitors and then\, in an act that served as little more than a footnote in Homer’s original story\, inexplicably hangs Penelope’s twelve maids. \nNow\, Penelope and her chorus of wronged maids tell their side of the story in a new stage version by Margaret Atwood\, adapted from her own wry\, witty and wise novel. \nThe Penelopiad tells the story of Penelope\, wife of the famous Odysseus. Penelope\, along with her twelve maids\, share their side of the story\, in a play that examines gender and class in true Atwood fashion.

She is an Emmy-winning veteran comedy writer and producer\, most known for her thirteen years with Saturday Night Live where she eventually became the head writer. After leaving Saturday Night Live\, Steele took over as Creative Director of the comedy website Funny or Die\, started by her friends Adam McKay and Will Ferrell. While at Funny or Die\, Steele wrote the films\, Casa De Mi Padre\, Deadly Adoption\, and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Most recently\, Steele was the subject of the new Netflix documentary Will & Harper\, which chronicles her evolving relationship with longtime collaborator and friend Will Ferrell. The documentary centers around a road trip the two friends take across America for the first time since Harper’s transition\, and nearly thirty years after they first met on the set of SNL. Will & Harper premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and debuted September 27 on Netflix. \nThe lecture will be moderated by University of Iowa English professor and author Melissa Febos. Melissa Febos is the author of four books\, including the memoir\, Whip Smart. Most recently\, she published a craft book\, Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative\, which was a National Bestseller and an LA Times Bestseller. Febos is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow\, a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow\, and the winner of the Jeanne Córdova Nonfiction Award from LAMBDA Literary.

DESCRIPTION:Genre Fiction Writing: Dragons\, Aliens\, Ghosts-So What? \nEvery Wednesday in March starting:\nMar 05\, 2025\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM \nIowa City\, 1019 E Washington St\, Iowa City\, IA 52240\, USA\nAbout the event \nDo you have an idea for a sweeping fantasy but don’t know where to start? Or an idea for a tense\, spine tingling horror but don’t know how to create that suspense on the page? In this class\, we’ll approach genre writing by starting with the most important element: a compelling protagonist. Too often\, the intricate magic system or impressive scary monster is where all our writing efforts go\, but a story is only interesting if the reader is invested in who it is happening to. Questions we’ll consider: Why is your protagonist the right lead for this story? What does your protagonist have to lose? What does the antagonist make the protagonist face about themselves? Generative writing prompts will be used to help us figure out who our characters are\, what they want\, and why it matters if they succeed (or fail!) We will then develop our fantastical/sci-fi/horror worlds around our protagonist and their internal struggles. By the end of this course\, you will have a general structure for your genre novel\, an outline for your protagonist’s character arc\, and several workshopped scenes. No experience necessary! Writers of any level are welcome. \nINSTRUCTOR: Tatiana Schlote-Bonne is the author of the YA horror novel\, Such Lovely Skin\, and the forthcoming adult horror novel\, The Mean Ones (September 2025). She has an MFA from The Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa.
