SUMMARY:The Cure at Troy: A Version of Sophocles’ Philoctetes
DESCRIPTION:Odysseus seeks out the banished Philoctetes in hopes of gaining a strategic advantage for the Greeks in their prolonged siege of Troy\, enlisting the son of Achilles in an elaborate deception to steal a weapon of immense power. But in the conflict between private and public morality\, do the ends justify the means? This ancient text by the greatest of Greek dramatists finds new urgency in this adaptation by Irish poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.

SUMMARY:Leftover Salmon performs at the Englert
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by:\nIowa City Downtown District \n\n\n\n  \nFew bands stick around for thirty years. Even fewer bands leave a legacy during that time that marks them as a truly special\, once-in-lifetime type band. And no band has done all that and had as much fun as Leftover Salmon. \nSince their earliest days as a forward thinking\, progressive bluegrass band who had the guts to add drums to the mix and who was unafraid to stir in any number of highly combustible styles into their ever evolving sound\, to their role as a pioneer of the modern jamband scene\, to their current status as elder-statesmen of the scene who cast a huge influential shadow over every festival they play\, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link in keeping alive the traditional music of the past while at the same time pushing that sound forward with their own weirdly\, unique style. \nThe band now features a lineup that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history and is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around the core of founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman\, the band is now powered by banjo-wiz Andy Thorn and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison\, drummer Alwyn Robinson\, and dobro player & keyboardist Jay Starling. \nThe current lineup is continuing the long\, storied history of Salmon which found them first emerging from the progressive bluegrass world and coming of age as one the original jam bands\, before rising to become architects of what has become known as Jamgrass and helping to create a landscape where bands schooled in the traditional rules of bluegrass can break free of those bonds through nontraditional instrumentation and an innate ability to push songs in new psychedelic directions live. \nSalmon is a band who for more than thirty years has never stood still; they are constantly changing\, evolving\, and inspiring. If someone wanted to understand what Americana music is they could do no better than to go to a Leftover Salmon show\, where they effortlessly glide from a bluegrass number born on the front porch\, to the down-and-dirty Cajun swamps with a stop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans\, to the hallowed halls of the Ryman in Nashville\, before firing one up in the mountains of Colorado.

SUMMARY:Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn traditional dances with live music. No partner needed. Contra dancing is a series of repeated patterns with its roots in folk dancing going back to Jane Austen’s time and beyond; it is also related to Irish ceili dancing and American square dancing. Our dances are great for beginners\, as there is no footwork to learn. The caller goes through each dance with us before the music begins\, then “calls” the dance with the music\, telling us what to do next. No problem if you get mixed up — other dancers can help you. Bring a friend or come alone; there are always plenty of people to dance with! Children are welcome with parental supervision. The easiest dances are at the beginning of the evening. Casual dress and snug footwear are encouraged. Free\, but donations welcome. First Saturday of the month\, but check the calendar for location. It’s great fun!

SUMMARY:Pat Reedy live at Field Day Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Pat Reedy comes to Field Day Brewing for the first time ever!\nAs dedicated a drifter as the day is long\, Nashville based songwriter Pat Reedy holds the reputation of a touring musician with more miles\, more stories and more freewheeling spirit than most. Make no mistake though\, the man who titled his 2017 solo debut Highway Bound hasn’t switched gears in the slightest on his latest release Make It Back Home. Produced by John James Tourville of The Deslondes\, this album is a document of driving honky tonk and highway poetry. A collection of memories\, reflections\, and unconventional life experiences that consume the mind when the idea of your own bed is defined more by dates on a calendar than a permanent place.

SUMMARY:Grace morse led workshop: Perusing the Personal through Art.
DESCRIPTION:Grace morse will be leading the workshop Perusing the Personal through Art. starts at $255. Feb 5th–Feb 26th\, (4 sessions) 7pm-9pm. \nIowa City\, 1019 E Washington St\, Iowa City\, IA 52240\, USA \nA workshop for memoirists\, essayists\, or art lovers. Any level of experience is welcome! \nDescription:\nIn this four-session course\, participants will craft creative nonfiction narratives that respond to various forms of art (music\, movies\, paintings\, etc.) they have a connection with. By using writing techniques to capture our various experiences of other art forms to the page\, we will endeavor to translate the unique and nuanced ways that those art works make us feel and the change they might inspire within us. The first half of each session will be spent discussing some craft techniques for writing about particular genres (i.e.\, films\, music videos\, etc.) and any relevant reading. The second half of the class will be allotted for writing and exploration. Together\, we will read and discuss examples of writers responding to art in personal ways\, particularly essays and poems; engage with generative writing prompts\, and complete one round of workshop. Students will also have the opportunity to introduce the rest of the class to at least one work of art they find compelling. This class is open to students of all levels. \nGrace Morse (she/her) is a writer and third year MFA candidate in the Nonfiction Writing Program at Iowa. Originally from New Orleans\, she writes memoir and cultural criticism rooted in curiosity about heritage and healing. Her essays have been shortlisted in CRAFT’s 2023 Flash Prose Prize and Brink’s 2024 Literary Journal Award for Hybrid Writing. Her latest essay can be found in CRAFT Magazine.

SUMMARY:Art & Write Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the long\, rich\, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.\nProfessional\, aspiring\, and amateur artists alike\, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History’s magical gallery spaces after hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists. \nTell a friend\, grab a notebook\, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We’ll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we’ll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We’ll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we’ve been working on\, connecting with others (optional\, of course!). \nPlease note\, the Museum is typically closed during this time\, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open\, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.
