SUMMARY:FREE - Technology and the Rise of Great Powers w/LUNCH
DESCRIPTION:Will China or the US lead the way in the Fourth Industrial Revolution? \n  \nTo answer this question\, leading thinkers and policymakers in both countries draw lessons from past technology-driven power transitions that center the moment of innovation – the eureka moment that sparks astonishing technological feats. \n  \nIn this talk\, focused on his new book\, Technology and the Rise of the Great Powers\, Jeffrey Ding offers a different explanation of how technological revolutions affect competition among great powers. Rather than focusing on which state was the first to introduce major innovations\, he investigates why some states were more successful than others at adapting and embracing general-purpose technologies at scale. \n  \nDrawing on historical case studies of past industrial revolutions and statistical analysis\, Ding develops a theory that emphasizes institutional adaptations oriented around diffusing technological advances throughout the economy. Applying GPT diffusion theory to analyze US-China competition in AI\, Ding’s book derives novel insights into how today’s technological breakthroughs will affect the US-China power balance and the optimal strategies for the US and China to pursue.

Now\, as part of the 60th anniversary tour of Twyla Tharp Dance\, the work returns home so Hancher patrons can once again revel in the composer and choreographer’s conversation\, which includes vocabulary from an array of dance styles including ballet\, jazz\, modern\, social\, and street. Also on the program\, a new work entitled Slack Tide\, featuring Philip Glass’s Aguas Da Amazonia\, which was arranged and will be performed live by Hancher favorites Third Coast Percussion on a collection of custom-designed instruments. \n“To say Twyla Tharp is still at it after all these years would be inaccurate. Because there is never anything still about Twyla Tharp.” — The Washington Post \n[Philip Glass’s] spare and layered compositions can be interpreted in many ways other than as written\, and … Third Coast Percussion brings even more layers to Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia … [T]hese musicians brought an exquisite sense of joy to their performance.” — Third Coast Review \n  \nPROGRAM\nDIABELLI\nMusic: Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations \nSLACK TIDE\nMusic: Philip Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia \nTwyla Tharp Website

Porchlight’s weeknight salon series provides a space for visiting writers\, local artists\, university students\, and community members to engage in dialogue. \nSusan Hill Newton has worked in all realms of book editing\, serving both trade and academic publishers and nonprofits. Her breadth of experience ranges from acquisitions to book development\, line editing to program direction\, to the writing and editing of marketing collateral. She presently sits as the managing editor at University of Iowa Press\, where she is charged with overseeing the editorial program of roughly thirty books per year. Susan lived in Denver\, Colorado for more than twenty years\, before making the move to Iowa City with her husband and two daughters. \nJesus “Chuy” Renteria is an author\, artist\, dancer\, and teacher\, but above all\, they are a storyteller. Born in Iowa City and raised in West Liberty IA\, both sides of his family are from border towns in Mexico that transplanted to meatpacking towns in the Midwest. Growing up in West Liberty\, he oscillated between the Mexican\, Laotian\, and small-town cultures that made up Iowa’s first majority-Hispanic town. Chuy tells stories celebrating the spaces between cultures\, of mangled Spanglish and generational clashes\, of the messiness of people finding themselves. In addition to his writing\, Chuy is a Success Coach with the non-profit RSFIC (Resilient Sustainable Future For Iowa City) where they support community partners looking to create meaningful connections with their neighbors. They write the Substack\, “Of Spanglish and Maximalism\,” which details\, among other things\, the trials of being a former DEI professional in upper academia. They were the host of The Englert’s Writers of Color Reading Series podcast. Their first full-length publication\, a memoir titled “We Heard it When We Were Young\,” released in November 2021 with The University of Iowa Press. He spends his free time with his wife Darcy and their first born Marisol Alana. \nAlisha Jeddeloh is a writer; the fiction editor of Brink\, an in-print literary journal dedicated to publishing hybrid\, cross-genre work of both emerging and established creatives; and an editor of the We the Interwoven series of bicultural anthologies. In her writing\, she explores the lies we tell ourselves and others\, as well as the tension between individual and community\, insiders and outsiders. She lives in Iowa City\, Iowa\, with her family\, where she is currently working on a novel that examines the intersection of astrology\, technology\, and transcendence. She can be found at alishajeddeloh at gmail or @alishajeddeloh on Instagram. \n

SUMMARY:The Cure at Troy: A Version of Sophocles’ Philoctetes
DESCRIPTION:Odysseus seeks out the banished Philoctetes in hopes of gaining a strategic advantage for the Greeks in their prolonged siege of Troy\, enlisting the son of Achilles in an elaborate deception to steal a weapon of immense power. SUMMARY:Leftover Salmon performs at the Englert
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by:\nIowa City Downtown District \n\n\n\n  \nFew bands stick around for thirty years. Even fewer bands leave a legacy during that time that marks them as a truly special\, once-in-lifetime type band. And no band has done all that and had as much fun as Leftover Salmon. \nSince their earliest days as a forward thinking\, progressive bluegrass band who had the guts to add drums to the mix and who was unafraid to stir in any number of highly combustible styles into their ever evolving sound\, to their role as a pioneer of the modern jamband scene\, to their current status as elder-statesmen of the scene who cast a huge influential shadow over every festival they play\, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link in keeping alive the traditional music of the past while at the same time pushing that sound forward with their own weirdly\, unique style. \nThe band now features a lineup that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history and is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around the core of founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman\, the band is now powered by banjo-wiz Andy Thorn and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison\, drummer Alwyn Robinson\, and dobro player & keyboardist Jay Starling. \nThe current lineup is continuing the long\, storied history of Salmon which found them first emerging from the progressive bluegrass world and coming of age as one the original jam bands\, before rising to become architects of what has become known as Jamgrass and helping to create a landscape where bands schooled in the traditional rules of bluegrass can break free of those bonds through nontraditional instrumentation and an innate ability to push songs in new psychedelic directions live. \nSalmon is a band who for more than thirty years has never stood still; they are constantly changing\, evolving\, and inspiring. If someone wanted to understand what Americana music is they could do no better than to go to a Leftover Salmon show\, where they effortlessly glide from a bluegrass number born on the front porch\, to the down-and-dirty Cajun swamps with a stop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans\, to the hallowed halls of the Ryman in Nashville\, before firing one up in the mountains of Colorado.

SUMMARY:Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn traditional dances with live music. No partner needed. Contra dancing is a series of repeated patterns with its roots in folk dancing going back to Jane Austen’s time and beyond; it is also related to Irish ceili dancing and American square dancing. Our dances are great for beginners\, as there is no footwork to learn. The caller goes through each dance with us before the music begins\, then “calls” the dance with the music\, telling us what to do next. No problem if you get mixed up — other dancers can help you. Bring a friend or come alone; there are always plenty of people to dance with! Children are welcome with parental supervision. The easiest dances are at the beginning of the evening. Casual dress and snug footwear are encouraged. Free\, but donations welcome. First Saturday of the month\, but check the calendar for location. It’s great fun!

But in the conflict between private and public morality\, do the ends justify the means? This ancient text by the greatest of Greek dramatists finds new urgency in this adaptation by Irish poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.

But in the conflict between private and public morality\, do the ends justify the means? This ancient text by the greatest of Greek dramatists finds new urgency in this adaptation by Irish poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.

SUMMARY:Pat Reedy live at Field Day Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Pat Reedy comes to Field Day Brewing for the first time ever!\nAs dedicated a drifter as the day is long\, Nashville based songwriter Pat Reedy holds the reputation of a touring musician with more miles\, more stories and more freewheeling spirit than most. Make no mistake though\, the man who titled his 2017 solo debut Highway Bound hasn’t switched gears in the slightest on his latest release Make It Back Home. Produced by John James Tourville of The Deslondes\, this album is a document of driving honky tonk and highway poetry. A collection of memories\, reflections\, and unconventional life experiences that consume the mind when the idea of your own bed is defined more by dates on a calendar than a permanent place.
