SUMMARY:Art & Write Night
DESCRIPTION:Join the long\, rich\, historical tradition of artists creating in our spaces.\nProfessional\, aspiring\, and amateur artists alike\, make our museum your muse. The return of this popular program series welcomes guests into the Museum of Natural History’s magical gallery spaces after hours to work on sketching or writing projects with other campus and community artists. \nTell a friend\, grab a notebook\, and join us on the first Friday of each month. We’ll provide a new inspo prompt for each session and will sometimes move about the Museum but we’ll always start in the Hageboeck Hall of Birds (Bird Hall) on the third floor of Macbride Hall. Join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and feel free to participate in a themed creation challenge or work on your own project with our exhibits as inspiration. We’ll save the last 15-30 minutes of each session to share what we’ve been working on\, connecting with others (optional\, of course!). \nPlease note\, the Museum is typically closed during this time\, meaning the main entrance to Iowa Hall (atop the large staircase outside on the east side of Macbride Hall) will be closed and locked. All other building doors will be open\, offering access to the Ground Floor of Macbride Hall. Bird Hall is located on the third floor of Macbride Hall and can be reached by stairs or by taking the elevator to the third floor and crossing the auditorium to the north side of the building.

SUMMARY:Grief Writing - A monthly exploration of loss and heartbreak
DESCRIPTION:Grief Writing – A monthly exploration of loss and heartbreak \nTime: First Saturday of each month\, 10 am to 11:15 am Central Time. Sat. 4/5\, Sat. May 3rd\, Sat. June 7th \n“I am not suggesting that we live a life preoccupied with sorrow. I am saying that our refusal to welcome the sorrows that come to us\, our inability to move through these experiences with true presence and conscious awareness\, condemns us to a life shadowed by grief. Welcoming everything that comes to us is the challenge. This is the secret to being fully alive.” – Francis Weller \nJennifer New leads this monthly group that uses writing as a reflective tool to explore loss. Francis Weller’s Five Gates of Grief provides a backbone to consider grief from multiple angles\, e.g.\, death of loved ones\, loss of health or ability\, grief for the world. This is an ongoing group; you’re welcome to attend once or each time. No writing experience is needed. \nRegister here to receive a Zoom link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCAE8cbaf5Va-3V5TrXUTtTOJ9-PIlnE4eqq3xEw5kIR9_1A/viewform Or come in-person. \nPayment: This class is offered via dana – the Buddhist concept of giving without expectation of receiving anything in return. Making donations to recognize the leader’s teachings are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Reading as a Memoirist
DESCRIPTION:Reading as a Memoirist \n“Read\, because that’s the way you learn how the language works. That’s the way you learn about emotion on paper. That’s how you find out how stories are fastened\, by reading and reading and reading.” – Katherine Paterson \nStarts Apr 6th\nFrom $255\nPorchLight Literary Arts Center \nMany of us write about and from our lives in order to make sense of them. We have questions about why certain things happened to us\, why we responded the way we did\, or how the context of family\, place\, and history impacted us. \nWriting memoir and other autobiographical forms is a deeply challenging and satisfying way to meet our lives\, but it also comes with issues that are specific to this genre. Since our material comes from our memories\, it can be difficult to decipher what readers do and don’t know; are we giving them ample information to follow the story? Often\, we’ve gleaned details from other people; how do we differentiate their memories from ours? If we’re moving between different periods of our life\, keeping a timeframe straight can be difficult. \nOne of the best ways to approach these issues is to learn from published authors. In this class with writing coach\, essayist\, and biographer Jennifer New\, we’ll read excerpts and short pieces from writers like Mary Karr\, Deborah Levy\, Hua Hsu\, and Kiese Laymon. \nThe four classes will be focused\, respectively\, on voice\, sensory detail\, timeframe\, and interiority. Each class will include short writing exercises and writing assignments will be provided to pursue between classes and/or later. \nIf you have a current project\, please bring it with you as there will be opportunities to experiment with rewriting sections. If you don’t have a project\, the assignments will allow you to craft new material. \nFor writers who would like to have a one-time meeting with Jennifer to assess their current project\, there is an additional fee of $50 that can be set up directly with her. \nJennifer New is a writer\, business owner\, and longtime University of Iowa administrator. For more than a decade\, Jennifer served as the

SUMMARY:Mel Oliven Lecture: "Migraine: Clues from a Neuropeptide"
DESCRIPTION:Join Kirkwood Community College for the 53rd Annual Mel Oliven Lecture on Thursday\, April 10\, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on Kirkwood’s main campus in Cedar Rapids! The lecture will take place in Iowa Hall Room B and is free and open to the public. \nThis year’s lecture features Dr. Andy Russo\, Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics and Neurology at the University of Iowa. His lecture is entitled\, “Migraine: Clues from a Neuropeptide.” \nThe focus of Dr. Russo’s research is the molecular basis of migraine. He is using mouse genetic models to study how the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) contributes to the pain and altered sensory processing of migraine. He is a consultant for several companies developing migraine therapeutics and holds four migraine-relevant patents. He is currently identifying the mechanisms of CGRP action in the nervous system\, with a focus on the role of sleep and glymphatic clearance during migraine and post-traumatic headache. The overall goal of his studies is to develop effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for migraine and post-traumatic headache. \nDr. Russo received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California\, Berkeley and did postdoctoral training at the University of California\, San Diego on the neuropeptide CGRP. He has received a number of teaching awards and honors\, including the J.P. Long Teaching Award for lifetime teaching commitment\, and the Dr. Harold A. Myers Endowed Professorship in recognition of contributions in biomedical teaching and curriculum development.
